Alan Greer has been a stalwart of Wellington rowing for many years. Please contribute to show your thanks.
Wellington
After 46 years with Star Boating Club, and 28 years coaching at Wellington Girls’ College we are very sad that Alan is moving to Whanganui.
Our aim with this fund raising is to raise enough money to give Alan the trip of a lifetime, just happening to coincide with the World Rowing Champs in Austria next August. We need to raise $9500.
Alan joined the Star Boating Club as a novice oarsman in 1972 and has been a part of the Star Boating Club ever since. With competitive rowing being his main involvement up until 1976, Alan moved into the coaching and administration side of the club and has been a member of the committee taking up Club Captain duties in 1977, 78 and 79.
During a restructure of the club Alan was appointed Director of Rowing, a position he held for several years. At the same time he picked up the Wellington Girls' College rowing coach role and during this tenure his crews have had considerable success. Several of his rowers have medalled at the prestigious regatta for secondary schools, the Maadi Cup. 7 rowers he has coached have gone on to represent NZ - Kate Robinson, Bea van Mullekom, Zoe Gordon, Linda Matthews, Jess Paton, Louise Trappit and Jackie Kiddle.
In 2013 Alan received the Trish McKelvey Volunteer Leadership Award. Sport Wellington CEO, Phil Gibbons said that “Alan has made a tremendous contribution to rowing in particular but also indirectly to our community. His passion, commitment, determination and achievements are a great example to us all and Sport Wellington is very pleased that he is being appropriately recognised here tonight through the presentation of this award. His leadership and commitment to the Star Boating Club over the last 40 plus has been vital given the changes that have occurred. Alan can be enormously proud of his achievements and his commitment to the community”
Alan has consistently put in a lot of his time and effort over the past 46 years into both the Star Boating Club and also the development of young women through rowing at Wellington Girls’ College.
We thank you all in advance for your generosity in helping us show our appreciation to Alan in this way.
I am head of the Wellington Girls' College Rowing committee. On behalf of Wellington Girls' College and Star Boating Club, we are raising funds for a farewell present for Alan Greer.
We will use all the money raised to give Alan an amazing trip to Austria and the World Rowing Champs in August 2019.
