Canterbury
Alfie the wonderful Kennedy Unit cat has been involved in an accident. While the cause is unclear he has sustained a severe fracture to his back leg.
Alfie was last seen on the unit at 10pm Boxing Day. When he did not arrive home for breakfast the next morning staff began to worry, as this was very uncharacteristic. With no sign of him over the day, the afternoon staff went out several times over the shift to look for him. At 10.30pm Alfie was heard clambering through his cat door. He was very distressed and was swooped off to the emergency vet immediately.
Kennedy is a unit based at Hillmorton Hospital Christchurch for the detox of alcohol and drugs. Alfie joined the team at Kennedy as a kitten in January 2018. His presence on the unit has added to the therapeutic environment within the unit. Studies show the increasing benefits of pet therapy within hospital settings.
Alfie has taken on his therapeutic role like a champ. He has a sense of which clients need him the most and will comfort them throughout their stay. He has a charming and cheeky personality and is always a great source of entertainment for clients, their family/whanau and of course the Kennedy staff too. There is never a dull moment with Alfie around.
As Alfie's injury is quite bad he will require surgery, worst case scenario being amputation.
Any donations towards his vet bills would be gratefully accepted by staff and clients.
My name is Haidee. I'm one of the nurses who work on the unit where Alfie lives.
The funds received will go directly towards Alfie's vet bills.
Any surplus amount will be used to replenish Alfie's ongoing funds for his daily life as a live-in therapeutic cat.
3weeks post op 22 January 2019
Well it’s been 3 weeks since the big op and Alfie is healing like a wee champ.
His pins remain insitu with no issues.
He no longer requires pain relief.
His appetite is back, and he loves ice cubes in his water on these hot days.
He’s coping with his confinement far better than anticipated.
Back to the Vet next week, check in for another update then.
We are extending the timeframe of this page as Alfie’s costs are significant. He also has ongoing costs, including vet check ups, getting the pins removed and physio for rehabilitation.
Alfie and the Kennedy team appreciate the ongoing support and donations.
