Karatedo Shotokai New Zealand is proud to send an entirely female team to the 2024 New Caledonia Open Karate Tournament. The team will compete in individual Kata (forms), Team Kata (groups of 3 with a fighting display), and Kumite (fighting).
While in New Caledonia, they will attend training sessions with 7x World Champion Sensei Hasegawa for Kata training and Kumite training with the coach of Da Costa, Sensi Olivier Bequdry.
Our six Kata specialists are Black belts Gemma Viccars, Tilly Brookland, and Ruby Davies, these three have gained Silver at National level. Brown Belts Kelsi Hogan, Stellar Warren, and Amelia Pace have achieved Silver at Local level.
The 7th member of our travel team is a 16-year-old Kumite (fighting) competitor. She received the Gold medal in the 2023 New Zealand Nationals, gaining a place in the New Zealand team for Oceania 2023.
Sensei Shelley Henderson and Senpai Gail Humm will accompany the girls and will compete in Senior Vets.
Our Club is a non-profit organization. All senior grades volunteer their time for Club nights, and a small team of senior volunteers provides extra training nights for competitive training. Our focus is to share the health and well-being benefits of martial arts, especially with our young people.
The team has started fundraising efforts with karate displays, sausage sizzles, and working bees.
Please support our team in helping reduce the considerable cost of this trip. Thank you.
All funds will go directly to travel costs for the team.
Change in plans due to civil unrest in New Caledonia 4 June 2024
We would like to thank everyone who donated over the last couple of months. The support we have received has been amazing. Outside this page, the team has been very busy with fundraising events and has come close to meeting all targets.
Regrettably, our planned trip to New Caledonia has been canceled due to the civil unrest. However, with the hard work the girls have put into training and fundraising, we want to look at this as an opportunity to redirect our efforts toward a new challenge—preparing for the Australian Open in March 2025. This significant event will undoubtedly foster the growth and development of our team. With permission from Give-a-Little, all funds from this page will be redirected directly to the travel and accommodation costs of the 2025 Australia trip.
We hope we can visit New Caledonia in the future, but most of all, we hope everyone from our sister club there is safe and that the unrest comes to an end quickly so they can resume their lives and their training.
Once again, thank you to you all for making us a step closer to our goals.
Thank you Shelley
