Supporting Wai's hauora journey as she fights cancer

Rotorua, Bay Of Plenty

Just before her 40th birthday in July 2020, Waipurukamu was diagnosed with Stage 3 Colorectal Cancer. Wai went through two months of chemo and radiation treatment and in January 2021 she had a laparoscopic resection of rectal tumour.

Unfortunately, in February 2023 specialists found a spot on her lungs and an October PET scan confirmed secondary cancer which meant it had spread to other parts of her body - her lung and neck. She has now been diagnosed with Stage 4B Metastatic Colorectal Cancer.

Wai is an amazing mum of three, wife, sister, Aunty and friend who is always putting everyone else first. Her whānau are her everything and she would do anything for them. She would even work full-time and some to make sure they are supported and cared for while she's fighting this cancer. Wai is not one to ask for help because she always the one finding solutions so we (her friends and extended whānau) are asking for her. Financial pressures can be overwhelming during stressful times and we want to remove this worry for Wai, her husband Howie and their tamariki, so she can put all her energy into healing and enjoying quality time with the people she loves.

Your support, no how matter how big or small, will be greatly appreciated by Wai and her whānau. Please help us to help her – she never thinks twice about supporting other people and now is our chance to return the favour.
