Amiyah needs our support as she awaits jaw surgery after many trips to the hospital and having breathing difficulties, and a hole in heart
Branxholme, Southland
Amiyah Millar and her family have had a roller coaster of a journey since she was welcomed into the world 8 weeks ago. Her troubles started with finding a hole in her heart, severe reflux issues as well as respiratory system, with having moments where she would pause breathing, and then stopping breathing completely for long periods of time. Their journey started with two weeks in Southland Hospital with numerous testing, poking and prodding, scans, tubing, a trip to Dunedin hospital and back to Southland Hospital for another week while they established what was happening for wee Amiyah.
Fast forward a week and we were flown to starship hospital after needing to call an ambulance when Amiyah stopped breathing again, she had a procedure to check her airways, finding that her respiratory system is okay but that her jaw sits to far back making her tounge block her airways causing a need for surgery in the coming weeks.
The next step in Amiyah's journey is she is going to undertake major jaw surgery to slowly adjust her jaw forward, to pull her tounge away from the back of her throat. They are looking at staying at Starship for the next month.
Jack and Kate would like to thank the amazing support and are continuously grateful for the Ronald McDonald Foundation, Agri-Centre (Jacks Work) and all the love and support from family and friends.

Amiyahs update 🌻 30 April 2025
Hiya everyone, sorry we have been slack on the updates but once again we wanted to start off with another huge thank you for all of your continuous support, love & donations. We are so incredibly lucky to have all of your support wrapping around us from afar!
We have had the plastic surgeon come and give us 3 options, one being mandibular distraction surgery, another being tracheostomy surgery, or continue giving Amiyah time with her NPA tube and hope that as time passes on, her muscles will strengthen as well as her jaw growing, which will hopefully mean her tongue base collapse will lessen as she grows. We had a couple of days to ponder on our options and have gone with our gut instincts to give Amiyah more time with the NPA rather than opt for surgery as she seems to be doing okay for the time being. We are in the right hands being up in Auckland with the right specialist care around the clock so it only feels right to give her more time. With surgery comes risks during, after & in the future that we would rather avoid (if we can). Over the next 2 weeks the team will be keeping close eyes on Amiyah to see if we can carry on and continue on with the NPA and then reassess again. For now our girl is doing well, she is safe and as happy as she could possibly be 🤍 We will be getting further training on NPA & NG tube care to allow us ward leave on & off throughout the day to be able to take our girl to explore more than just the hospital walls 🤞🏼Kate, Jack & Amiyah xx
