Please support Andrea Canning (nee Jones) cancer fight

Wellington

Andrea Canning , ‘Andy’ or ‘Nandy’ (to the Grandkids), is a mother/stepmother of 4 and a grandmother of 4. Andrea has spent her life putting everyone else first and is a wonderfully loyal and selfless person. She is family orientated and a best friend to many; fun and full of energy. Throughout her life she has tirelessly supported everyone around her, always happy to invite others into her home and to lend a hand. Her door is always open, her kitchen always ready and she has fought many battles for those who have needed her.

This time Andrea needs to get a little support.

Andrea is currently going through chemotherapy for a grade 3 invasive triple negative breast cancer tumour that has spread from her breast to her lymph nodes. A successful treatment outcome is not guaranteed. Andrea has shown inspirational courage to date and is fighting to beat this.

An immunotherapy medication, Pembrolizumab has been recommended by Andrea’s Oncologist to take in combination with her chemo.

This treatment option was only approved in December 2021 for breast cancer treatment in New Zealand and is not publicly funded. Andrea will have to self-fund at a cost of $116k.

We don’t understand why this treatment is not subsidised given it increases survival rates to >90%

Andrea’s family have created this Givealittle page to raise part of the overall costs for her treatment.

If you are reading this and wish to support Andrea’s fight then we would be deeply appreciative of any pledge no matter how small.

Update from Andrea Canning :)  14 March 2023

Hi there all you generous people. This is a small update on my cancer journey.

I finished the gruelling 2nd round of chemo at the end of August and this was followed by a

lumpectomy and lymph node dissection. Biopsies on the removed tissue showed no sign of cancer

cells so my Oncologist and Surgeon were extremely encouraged by this outcome and said I had had

the best response they could have hoped for!

Immunotherapy has carried on every three weeks throughout this period.

In December I had a 3 week course of daily radiation therapy which was thankfully wrapped up by

Christmas Eve. This is a safety guard to mop up any undetected cancerous cells that could possibly

be lurking in the affected areas.

I have now had 10 of the 16 sessions of Immuno and we are still hopeful this is the icing on the cake

and is going to keep me free from this insidious disease returning.

My hair is growing back, albeit short, grey and a bit curly but I am feeling a lot more energetic and

positive for the year to come.

I feel truly blessed that this has all been made possible and cannot ever thank you enough for the

love and support you have all shown.

Much love

Andy & Strat
