Aotearoa Sounds for Jamaica - Hurricane Melissa Relief

$10,290 of $10,000 goal
Given by 43 generous donors in around 5 months

Sound systems across Aotearoa are uniting for a nationwide fundraiser to support Jamaica's recovery efforts. In wake of Hurricane Melissa.

Wellington

Kia ora and warm greetings,

In the wake of Hurricane Melissa and the devastation felt across communities in Jamaica, sound systems and supporters throughout Aotearoa are uniting for a nationwide fundraiser. Through this collective movement, we aim to raise funds to support the homeland of reggae and sound system culture.

A powerful force shaping the art, culture and music we love. Empowering the oppressed, fueling the fires of liberation against the oppressor, and Aotearoa is no acception. Now it is our time to give back to the very nation that has inspired and uplifted the world for generations.

Proceeds will go to the Alpha School of Music (Alpha Boys School). Jamaica’s oldest music institution established 1880 as an orphanage by the Sisters of Mercy who taught music to the youth. The foundation that shaped the artists that paved the path to what Jamaican music culture is today. Alpha’s mission is to rebuild and support Western Jamaica's musicians, studios, and venues most impacted by Hurricane Melissa.

Announcements of supporting events will be posted to the Aotearoa Sounds for Jamaica (ASFJ) Givealittle page and social media. Along with gig posters added to the gallery for archiving and promotion.

Taupururariki Brightwell's involvement (page creator)

I run my own sound system, sharing a culture that has connected so many in Aotearoa. After my family was affected by Cyclone Gabrielle, the devastation of Hurricane Melissa feels close to home, and I feel a duty to give back to the nation of sound system.

Use of funds

Alpha’s focus is to support musicians in Western Jamaica whose rehearsal spaces, venues, and studios were affected, provide music-based wellbeing programmes, working with the western parishes to identify community needs and guide the path forward.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
