Retired Greyhound April needs help to pay for her recovery after being mauled while out for a walk.
Auckland
Hi, I'm April, a calm and gentle retired racing Greyhound.
On March 11th, I was on my daily on-lead walk down our road when I was attacked and badly mauled by two nasty dogs in a blindside attack. They ran out of their property and up the road to attack me outside my driveway. I was left with a 25cm by 18cm wound on my side, as well as other bites and injuries.
I was rushed to VSG in Auckland where I had surgery to repair as much as possible of my wounds, but a large part had to stay open because of the damage to the skin and surrounding tissue.
The owners of the attacking dogs had initially committed to pay for my vet bills, but after a couple of payments they told us they thought they had done enough.... (yeah, right!). Since they stopped paying I have had another 16 visits to VSG (they rock!) for re-bandaging, infection control and additional surgery to help my wounds heal. My owners have travelled almost 1200km and spent over 50 hours of their time getting me help, not to mention their disrupted lives and cancelled holidays.
The Auckland Council Animal Management team is currently preparing a case for prosecution and my owners will be seeking full recovery of the cost of the damage from the dogs owners, but in the meantime I need continuing care which my family is struggling to afford.
In advance, thank you for your support.
All money raised will go towards my ongoing vet bills, and once we have recovered money from the owners of the attacking dogs, we will donate all surplus money to the Greyhounds as Pets Trust.
