Our dream is for 2018 to be a slaughter free muster for our nations wild Kaimanawa herds. With your help we can make this a reality!
Nationwide
This winter the wild Kaimanawa herds are facing their biggest cull in years. In total 320 horses are being mustered (with the last 150 being mustered in early June) and Kaimanawa Heritage Horses are desperately needing homes for 20 more. With only a few days till applications close this really is your last chance to help save the lives of these wild horses, which will otherwise be slaughtered.
We've already taken 17 Kaimanawas from the April muster, more than we've ever trained before, but are compelled to take even more. In memory of Argo KH, Vicki's Kaimanawa from the 2014 muster, we would love your help to make 2018 a slaughter free cull.
While we're happy to donate our time and training (normally $2000+gst for the initial 4-6 weeks of handling of a mature horse), unfortunately saving these beautiful horses from slaughter is not without costs:
$250 - Rehoming fees
$330 - Transport
$400 - Gelding
$220 - Dentist & Sedation
$120 - Farrier x3 trims
$960 - Hay/Feed/Supplements for the first three months @ $80p/w
$ - Vet Bills (unknown costs)
$ - Yard Hire, Wood Chip Surface & Repairs (unknown costs)
= $2280
For every $2250 raised we will save another Kaimanawa from slaughter, then tame and train it to gain the skills needed to excel in domesticated life. If we fundraise in excess of the number of horses we can take on, additional Kaimanawas will be trained by our good friend Tommy Waara who is an exceptional horseman - he's partnering with us and KHH to ensure as many horses as possible are saved.
The journey of these Kaimanawas will be shared on social media so these horses can become ambassadors for their bred, helping to ensure the future survival of the Kaimanawa herds. If you'd like to see what we've accomplished during the first five weeks with our initial 17 wild Kaimanawas from the April muster, visit our facebook page Wilson Sisters, or look through the gallery to see the first 35 days of Captain's journey, a mature stallion trained by Kelly.
Money raised will go towards the horses basic costs, including transport, purchase, feed, vet bills, gelding, dental care and farrier care.
