Supporting the Kellas whānau during Sandra’s ICU stay, covering costs for travel, accommodation, time off work & caring for the tamariki.
Timaru, Canterbury
Our treasured mother, mother-in-law, nana, and great-nana, Sandra, is currently in ICU at Christchurch Hospital after a very sudden and unexpected medical event. This has come at an already incredibly vulnerable time for our whānau — just over two months ago, Sandra lost her beloved husband, Morris.
Sandra is the heart of our whānau and has been the full-time caregiver for two of her young grandchildren. While some of our whānau stay close to her in Christchurch, others have stepped in to care for the kids back home — all while navigating this emotional and uncertain journey. The doctors have indicated that Sandra will be a "long-term" patient, and we are uncertain how long she will remain in hospital.
Sandra has become known as the "Broken Heart Syndrome" case to the ICU staff, highlighting the depth of this sudden and overwhelming health crisis.
This Givealittle page has been created to help ease the financial strain on our whānau — supporting travel, accommodation, time off work, and other unexpected costs that have arisen. Funds will also go toward helping the whānau at home who are now caring for Sandra’s grandchildren, ensuring they are supported and surrounded with love while their nana cannot be with them.
Any koha, big or small, would be deeply appreciated. Your kindness, support, and aroha mean the world to us. Thank you for standing with us during this incredibly difficult time.
I am Sandra’s daughter-in-law, and part of the Kellas whānau.
Funds will be used for travel, time off work, and supporting the whānau caring for Sandra’s grandchildren while she’s in ICU.
Update! 11 September 2025
Kia ora koutou,
Ngā mihi nui for all your koha and kind wishes — we are truly grateful to each and every one of you.
We’re very pleased to share an update on Sandra. After seven weeks, she has now been able to leave Christchurch Hospital and come back to Timaru Hospital. While her road to recovery is still a long one, being in Timaru Hospital means she will be much closer to her friends and whānau, who can now support her more easily.
Thank you all so much again -
The Kellas Whānau x
