A few weeks ago, a scan revealed devastating and completely unexpected news for Amelie and her family. The diagnosis has turned their world upside down.

Amelie wanted to share her story in her own words:

"Hi, my name is Amelie Cakebread and I'm 17 years old. On July 22, my life changed forever. After years of symptoms, unanswered questions, and feeling like my pain wasn't always taken seriously, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Small Cell Ovarian Carcinoma, a rare and aggressive cancer.

Before this, I was a normal teenager in my final year of school, playing and coaching netball, working, spending time with friends, and dreaming about becoming a psychologist. Hearing the words 'you have cancer' changed everything.

I'm incredibly lucky to have my mum, dad, sister, brother, and amazing friends beside me. They've been my greatest source of strength. The hardest part is knowing I felt something wasn't right for so long, but it took years to find answers.

I can't change what's happened, but I can choose how I face it. I've given my cancer a nickname: 'F..kwit Jerry.' Sometimes you have to laugh when life feels unbelievably unfair. One thing Jerry should know is that I'm not giving up. Not now. Not ever.

This journey is the hardest thing I've ever faced, but cancer doesn't get to decide who I am or what my future looks like. I still dream of university, travel, laughter with friends, and the life I've always imagined. Thank you for standing beside me.

Use of funds

Funds raised will go towards help with the costs associated with Amelie's care such living costs, petrol, chidcare for Amelie's younger brother, travel and accommodation costs for her family while they navigate through this

Here is another update on how I am going. 6 September 2026

So, we are almost through the second Chemo cycle and round three starts on Wednesday.

After a pretty rough first part of this cycle which included another few days in hospital, I have had a few good days and even made it to school this week for a day.

Now the thing that helped me the most in getting to school was the wig that I have been able get thanks to your generous donations. As I have lost my hair already, I felt really self-conscious, but this wig has made such a difference. Yes, it’s not as great as my own hair but it has really helped me feel more confident in going out. For this boost in confidence, I truly thank you for all of your kindness. This picture in the update is me rocking my wig and hanging with my brother.
