Aydan

$4,370 of $10,000 goal
Given by 22 generous donors in around 6 months

Aydan needs a medical intervention to assist him with living a 'normal' life.

Waikato

Aydan is a thirteen-year-old boy that loves the outdoors, he is especially fond of time spend on the farm, caring for animals and swimming. Aydan longs to take part in activities that his friends enjoy, and would love to be able to attend school without the obstacles he faces now.

Aydan was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus on 12 February 2012, he was seven years old at the time of diagnosis. He spent five days in ICU and two in the general children’s ward, he was in a semi-coma when doctors finally realised what was wrong with him. He was admitted to hospital immediately.

Since his diagnosis, he has never had stable readings on his BGL (blood glucose levels). Also known as Brittle Diabetes. We also learned a few months into his diagnosis that he is Hypo-unaware.

He spent most of years 7, 8 and 9 in ICU with diabetes complications. As we are from South Africa the Pump he needed was not available on any Medical Aid scheme, and therefore we had no means of controlling his T1D.

The only solution available to him comes in the form of an Insulin Pump. After much debate, research and consultations, we have come to the conclusion that the MiniMed 670G System would be most suitable for his needs. As he is also Hypo-unaware this would assist him in getting a much needed good night’s rest because his insulin levels would be monitored by the pump, which acts like an 'artificial' pancreas.

The MiniMed 670G system offers SmartGuard, the only technology that mimics some of the functions of a healthy pancreas by providing two new levels of automated insulin delivery.

SmartGuard features:

AUTO MODE

Automatically adjusts your basal (background) insulin every five minutes based on your CGM readings.

Helps keep your sugar levels in your target range for fewer lows and highs — day and night.

SUSPEND BEFORE LOW

Stops insulin up to 30 minutes before reaching your pre-set low limits.

Automatically restarts insulin when your levels recover without bothersome alerts.

Helps you avoid lows and rebound highs.

Edna Hendriks' involvement (page creator)

I am a friend of the family and it is difficult to see how Aydan's life and that of his family is affected on a daily basis. He is an awesome young man who deserves a life that allows him to fulfill his dreams. This medical intervention will help him be healthy enough to do 'normal' kid stuff, go to school and spend quality time with his family.

Use of funds

To purchase a MiniMed 670G system and sundries for the first year.

Our daughter also was diagnosed at 7 years old. She has been on a pump since she was 12 and is now a confident 25 year old who enjoys life to the full. We hope this also helps Aydan to live a full life.
