Backyard Adventure is an outdoor education and sustainability project, connecting community, local issues and local solutions.
Otago
Backyard Adventure is a journey around Dunedin Harbour taking place Tuesday 28th April 2015 till Saturday 2nd May 2015. The participants will be taking themselves around the harbour under their own steam. Biking, tramping and sea kayaking will be included in the journey. On their way around local community members, groups and organisations will be joining the journey for small sections to interpret the land, tell the stories, history and also introduce the participants to some of the environmental and sustainability issues that the particular area faces. Once the journey is complete the girls will have two to three sessions on environmental advocacy. Looking at 4-5 of these local issues and creating an environmental action to help solve the issue in some way. The conclusion will be, the participants actually putting their plan into action. This project is trying to source funding to ensure that cost is not a barrier to the participants joining the journey.
The journey is running with 13 year 10 students.
The participants have been given the following brief on the journey:
Backyard Adventure is an outdoor education project based in your local area. During Backyard Adventure you will explore and discover the Dunedin Harbour area. Along the way you will learn more about biking, tramping, camping and sea kayaking. You may also learn more about yourself, your peers, your community and your potential to be a leader, through adventure, interaction with your community and sharing of stories.
I am trying to get the funding to pay for the accommodation, which is in local community hall's, basic food for the week, main meals; breakfast, lunch, dinner, hire of bike and bike trailer, which I have managed to get from a school I work with in my actual job for the cost of servicing, them, a boat back up incase weather stops us from sea kayaking to Quarantine Island, disposable cameras (used for my research).
I have much community support with many local people and organisations being involved to explain their place around the harbour, and issues facing that place.
The trip would cost each student $192 to participate. I am wanting to include all students rather than exclude some due to not being able to afford to come. I am writing a profile on my research so that I can share my findings at the end.
I am currently doing my Masters in Sport and Leisure Studies through Waikato University. My topic is place responsive outdoor education leading to environmentally sustainable action. This is part of my research. I have organised the journey and all of the community members and groups involved.
