Lead is a toxic heavy metal which is a major threat to kea.
Lead is accessible to kea as paint, flashings and nail heads in many buildings that were built prior to the 1990s in both backcountry and front country sites throughout the South Island. Monitoring by Department of Conservation, researchers and the Kea Conservation Trust since 2006 has shown that lead toxicity in kea is widespread, wherever kea and humans overlap.
As such, removing lead to protect kea is a priority. We have recently been successful in securing part funding of this project through Jobs for Nature - Mahi mō te Taiao but we still need funds to purchase non-toxic replacement roofing materials for mainly private buildings.
Our aim is to make places where kea are at high risk from lead poisoning, such as Arthur’s Pass, the Matukituki Valleys, Southland, Tasman, Aoraki Mt Cook, Okarito, Franz Josef, Fox Glacier and Haast - lead-free for kea.
Can you help us reach our goal of $200,000?
The Kea Conservation Trust was set up in 2006 to assist in conservation of wild Kea (Nestor notabilis) in their natural habitat and to increase the husbandry standards and advocacy potential of those Kea held in captive facilities within New Zealand.
Purchase of non-toxic roofing replacement materials (screws, flashings, washers, sealant etc).
