Blueskin Bay Salt

  • Update

      20 November 2025

Hello! Some good developments have taken place over the last few months, with the evaporation pods being placed out at Blueskin Bay, the first batch of salt being started, and verification occurring. The verification appointment went really well, and the verifier was very happy with the processes we're following. We have also had testing done on the final salt produced, and these have come back with mostly good results including safe levels of heavy metals and faecal coliforms. However, the sodium chloride content of the first batch of salt was too low, so we will not be able to sell this first batch of salt.

This first batch of salt has been a great learning experience and demonstrated that the process I’m following can produce a good amount of salt, and with safe levels of heavy metals and faecal coliforms, and has shown me some things that can be tweaked to improve the process. The second batch of salt will be started in December 2025! Thank you to everyone who has supported this project, we’re well on the way to producing delicious and local salt!

  • Goal reached!

      1 February 2025

We've reached my initial goal! Incredible! Thank you so much for contributing to this, it really means such a lot and will help me get this off the ground. I've adjusted the goal to $2,000 and all additional donations will all go towards this project!

  • An update!

Some exciting developments have occurred recently! Someone at the Otago Daily Times got in touch wanting to do an article on this project, which appeared in today's ODT (https://www.odt.co.nz/news/dunedin/community-condiment-creatively-concocted). This was both exciting and a bit nerve-wracking! Following the ODT contacting me, someone from The Press said they would like to do a story on this as well, so it's been really great to see there's a lot of interest in this.

Thank you to all of you for donating, it means such a lot! And to those of you who have shared the page, that is so kind and it has been a hoot to see donations from new names and your kind messages.

We also have a website now! This is a bit basic at the moment, but I wanted there to be more information available online: https://blueskinbaysalt.co.nz/

You can also follow us on Facebook and Instagram!

Today I'm off to pick up some of the materials needed to increase production. I'm hoping to reuse the cover from a tunnel house that got a tear in the plastic, but will be perfect for creating more covered evaporation chambers.

    Thank you for your support!

  • Thank you!!!

      20 January 2025

Thank you so much for donating to this project, the support from this and people I've spoken to has been really heartening and great impetus! Next steps will be to gather materials to make more evaporation units and get those producing salt, and setting up an online presence. So again, thank you.
