Help me understand why bottlenose dolphin use specific habitat: contribute to research of this endangered population!
Otago
A small population of botttlenose dolphin have made their home in Doubtful Sound, New Zealand. Although this area is small, the dolphins show distinct preferences for certain areas, my research focuses on increasing our understanding of why the dolphins have these habitat use patterns. I will work with the NZ whale and dolphin trust to investigate the distribution and density of prey species through filming what is present in areas of high and low use by the bottlenose dolphin. Donating to my project gives you the opportunity to take an active role in the conservation of this endangered dolphin population!
These dolphins had a dramatic decrease in numbers in the early 2000's causing the department of conservation and tourism companies to initiate spatial based management. This involves limiting tourist encounters to chance and reducing boat traffic in certain areas. Doubtful Sound is an amazing, unique area and these dolphins are important not only in their role as a top predator within the fjord but also as a target species for tourism.
It is important that any impact humans have on natural systems is managed, and that this management: whether it be restricting access or use, reducing our take, quotas or having seasons, is effective. This is one of the roles of research and a major aspect of my research for the bottlenose dolphin in Doubtful Sound. By better understanding where the dolphins are, if this habitat use has changed and what the reasons are for them to use these particular habitats, we will be able to ensure our management is effective.
This appeal for financial support for my studies at the University of Otago is an entirely personal one. The use of any funds raised is not overseen or audited by the University.
This project requires the use of underwater filming equipment which is what I hope to raise funds for, all financial aid I receive will go towards helping me buy equipment for this project.
Any financial aid received will contribute to buying equipment to be used in underwater filming: cameras, dive casing, batteries and memory cards. Excess funds will contribute to project travel and accommodation costs.
