Brett Houghton suffered a serious neck injury resulting in a broken C4 Vertebrae

Wellington

When Brett set off on Friday night, 8 December, he had no idea he wasn’t making cricket on Saturday.

Having a laugh while swimming with friends, Brett landed wrong after a slippery jump and hit the bottom of the pool head first. Brett had no feeling in his body from the neck down. After the paramedics arrived, he was helicoptered to Christchurch Hospital ICU where they confirmed the worst - Brett had broken his C4 vertebrae and bruised his spinal cord at the C4 level.

Brett has moved to Burwood Spinal Unit in Christchurch where he will spend the next year in rehabilitation. It’s going to be a very long road to recovery - both physically and mentally.

Brett has been an absolute inspiration. He is facing one of life’s most difficult challenges and has kept his spirits up. He is such a generous, all-round ‘good fulla’ and if karma has anything to do with his recovery he’ll be back on the cricket field in no time.

Thank you all so very much for your support and well wishes!
