Inspiring lady Joan Scaddan needs help to get to India for cutting-edge surgery from highly regarded neuro-surgeon to relieve her suffering
Birkenhead, Auckland
If you’ve met our mum, Joan, you have met an inspiring woman! All through her life, she has been a person of great compassion, generosity, courage and determination. Always putting the needs of others first, mum has a special heart for those who are suffering or lonely.
Mum has always been a fit, health-seeking lady, running competitively, race-walking, then later, becoming a member of the gym.
However, as you may also know, mum has battled with debilitating headaches, a sleeping disorder called narcolepsy, cataplexy and, more recently, extreme back pain and nerve damage.
She now has difficulty in sitting for any length of time, and resting has been a challenge due to the compressed nerves in her spine. Even lying down to sleep is only manageable for an hour or two, making any quality sleep impossible.
Although mum has done all she can to relieve the pressure on her spine, peace has been fleeting. Surgeons in New Zealand have not been able to offer her any hope for relief.
But now, at last, in a miraculous sequence of events, mum has been accepted for surgery in India with world-renowned neurosurgeon Dr Mazda Turel. Mum hopes to travel within the month and, God-willing, would return to New Zealand after only two weeks away.
If you would like to be a part of helping mum get to India to receive this life-changing surgery, we would be most grateful! Please feel free to give as little or as much as you choose because every bit will be so helpful and very much apprieciated.
I am one of Joan's three daughters
Surgery costs are approximately $12,000 and the travel and accomodation costs for her and her travel companion will be around $10,000.
Joan's Surgery has been Successfully Completed! 14 November 2025
Dear friends and supporters,
I am excited to be able to report that Mum's spinal surgery in India has been completed successfully and she is now at home, recovering in Auckland! We are so thankful that this trip was made possible because of the grace of God and the generosity of you and so many others. The funds raised through this page almost completely covered the airfares for Mum and I to get to and from Mumbai!
Mum had the five hour surgery under Dr Mazda Turel on Wednesday 29 October, as planned, and only 24 hours later, she was on her feet, walking around her room with the help of a physiotherapist. After recovering and rehabilitating for 11 days, she boarded the plane to return to New Zealand and is now walking (albeit slowly!) to the local shops and taking care of all her own needs in her apartment.
Although we understand that full recovery of the nerves will take 4-6 weeks, Mum is now able to sit and lie down with minimal discomfort, which is an amazing change for her. She looks forward to returning to the swimming pool in less than a week, having now had the stitches removed.
This has become an amazing, far-reaching story of God's goodness, and the power of the love of a community.
Thank you for being a part of this life-changing journey for Mum. You have been such a blessing!
With love, from Anneke, Joan and family
