Help to support cancer treatment and amputation costs for my husband and surgery for our family dog
Parklands, Christchurch
Over the last 7 months my husband and my life has changed significantly and we do not seem to be catching a break.
My mum has been undergoing treatment for lymphoma over the last year. In November last year my husband had a lump grow on his foot, originally that has been misdiagnosed as gout. In December 2022 we found out it was a rare Ewing sarcoma and he needed to start chemo immediately. We were planning to get married in February 2023 but were told this had to be postponed. With 10 days notice we managed to bring it forward.
Since then we've had 5 months of treatment, 6 unplanned ED trips for complication and a below the knee amputation of the leg with the tumor. As the injury was not ACC we do not receive any financial support towards the lost wages, my salary is $20 over the winz threshold for support but we are left to pay all our expenses on one income while I have to keep working and managing my husband's treatments, doctor's visits and physio's etc.
On top of this we have found out we do not qualify for public funding for fertility support and due to the chemo we cannot conceive naturally. Our hopes of children is now $22,000 per IVF cycle.
We don't like asking for help or relying on others but today or beloved dog has ruptured her knee joint and needs surgery that will be $3k + the alternative is putting her down as we cannot afford the surgery. We are at our final straw of events to deal with and would appreciate any support we can receive.
The money will be used to help pay for house modifications to make it accessible for my husband and towards the vet bills for surgery for our dog.
Positive outcomes! 27 July 2023
It has been awhile since the last update for our friends and family. After three tough weeks in hospital and 5 surgeries during this period we are finally on the other side and life is significantly improving. Michaels last surgery was a skin graft to close the wound. After 4 weeks the graft has fully healed and Michael has been signed off to start the process of getting a prosthetic. Hopefully in a month he'll have his first leg.
We have also had all the home modifications completed making the house safe and accessible for Michael which has made a huge difference.
Michael has also had his permanent custom wheelchair ordered which will hopefully arrive in three weeks!
Today we found out that chemotherapy has finished as there is no clinical known advantage of finishing the remaining cycles. Although we will have lots of ongoing follow up monitoring appointments over the next two years to check nothing comes back for now we are officially finished with chemo !
We are so grateful for all the support and love we have received from everyone.
