Canterbury

CCS Disability Action have partnered with Mike Chunn’s (a founding member of Split Enz) Play It Strange to bring ‘Celebrate Us!’, the first truly accessible music event of its kind, to New Zealand.

Celebrate Us! will take place in Christchurch on the 2nd of December 2017 from 1-8pm on the corner of Madras and Gloucester Streets. We’re already expecting over 2000 people to attend the event, and it will be streamed live online.

The day will feature the talents of;

Mel Parsons and band

Cam Dawson

Ruby Fusion

Marley Sola

Tuhoi Henry

Ashy Batchelor

D.A. Dub

Jono Boyle

Jonathan Petty

and More!!!!

This is your chance to support inclusion for all people, diversity and accessibility. Give to Celebrate Us! as a way of celebrating International Day for People with Disabilities and help ensure that it becomes an annual event we can all enjoy. Any amount you can spare to support this bold vision would be gratefully received.

1 in 4 people in New Zealand identified as disabled in the 2013 NZ Disability survey, that’s 25% of all New Zealanders. In spite of this, disabled people face marginalisation. Celebrate Us! aims to address some of the issues related to the right to participate in cultural life and leisure. By attending an event that is inclusive and accessible, the wider community will experience positive partnerships where disabled people and non-disabled people work together at every level.

Our supporters so far include: Holcim New Zealand Limited, Christchurch International Airport, The Earthquake Disability Leadership Group, The Cerebral Palsy Society of New Zealand, Smile Dealers, Tahu FM, The Christchurch City Council (Strengthening Communities Fund), and Hang Up Productions.

We’ve been supported by these and other organisations and people so far, financially and in kind but there are still costs involved in pulling off an event like this.

CCS Disability Action Canterbury West Coast Inc.'s involvement (page creator)

Since accidents and illness, 18 and 20 years ago, permanently affected me in terms of cognitive processes and physical function, I have navigated this world as a disabled person. Always interested in human rights, my experiences then led me to work for CCS Disability Action with a focus on the rights of people with disabilities and social change. I see the Celebrate Us! concert as a unique way to influence social change and celebrate the talents of some awesome musicians.

In 2013 I participated in the Be. Leadership programme and met the wonderful Mike Chunn, CEO of Play it Strange and founding member of the iconic Kiwi band Split Enz. We have worked together for the last two years to bring this concert to life.

About us

CCS Disability Action’s vision is to see every disabled person included in the life of their family and community. As well as providing direct support and advocacy, we have a wider role in shaping society’s attitudes towards people with a disability.

Use of funds

Your contribution will go towards the production costs of the event and accessibility costs including sing sign interpreters. If we end up raising more than what is needed for this year’s concert, the remaining donations will be allocated to future events of this kind.
