Chainless Cycling World Record Sponsorship for Children's Mountainbikes and Rider Training

  • Completion of Project and Handover of Bikes

      18 May 2025

The 10 new bikes were handed over to Te Aratai College on Tuesday 13 May, with a lot of activities for staff and students, including obstacle courses, slow bike races, fast bikes races. Thanks to Scott and Melanie from Te Aratai for making this happen at the school, and Scotty Brown for all his help with bikes and for subsidising the cost. $5811 was raised on Givealittle, less fees. The bikes retail value was $12,000, which was subsidised down to $8500, the difference in cost being covered by me. Thank you to those who donated and you can be happy that you've made a difference.

  • Completion of Fundraise and Use of Funds

      13 April 2025

This Givealittle fundraising project has closed, raising $5,811. Thank you to all of those of you who have donated.

We are proceeding with the donation of 10 new Trek Marlin bikes plus various accessories to Te Aratai College in Christchurch (https://www.tearatai.school.nz). The cost of this will be approximately $8,500. I'll be paying the difference myself.

The gear would normally have a retail value of $12,000. Thank you to Scotty Brown's bike shop for facilitating the pricing.

The handover of the bikes is planned for the week starting 5 May, and they currently have one of them at the school.

I'm really pleased that the bikes are going to a good home, with Te Aratai very enthusiastic about the options. Originally what I had in mind a series of events for targeted at children who could already ride and wanted to expand their experiences a bit. It appears that quite of few of them haven't had the opportunity to learn to ride, so that's a really good place to start. I'm really excited about it.

We hope to make the handover a bit of fun with teacher vs students demos and/or competition. It's the school'd decision how they want to run it and it sounds like a "bike library" is what they have in mind.

So thanks again for your support.

There will be further updates coming on the project's FB page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61574699634260

Note that I'm also planning another WR attempt a few months away, focusing on the cycling.

  • Great News, Te Aratai College will be getting 10 MTB bikes

    Bikes for Kids Project:

I've agreed to donate 10 MTB bikes to Te Aratai College today. I took one of them to the school and met the Outdoor Coordinator Scott there. He and some kids had a wee play, see photos. Between us we came with quite a few ideas on how to use them. Everyone is very enthusiastic and I'm sure we can make it a lot of fun as well as a learning experience. Handover will happen after the school holidays, maybe with some fun activities attached. CAP are onboard to host the kids for half a day. Thanks to those who've donated to the Givealittle page. We are still a bit short of the target and the page is open until Friday. But we're going ahead regardless.

  • World Chainless Record and Guinness WR

      9 April 2025

I'm thinking about repeating the world record attempt in a few months, aimed at getting formal ratification by Guinness WR. While the record was well measured and broke the previous record, it doesn't look like the previous record has been formally accepted yet. My next attempt will be a bit further, and aim to get some independent on site verification. Also on a bigger and faster pump track. The good news is that there won't be any more sponsorship for the second attempt, so those donating get 2 events for the price of 1. This page now closes on Friday, so there's still time to top top the total. I'll make a separate post about progress with the bike donation project, which is looking good

I've changed the closing date to 9 April to give everyone a bit more time to get organised and to get the word out

  • The day before:

      28 March 2025

The weather for tomorrow looks good. My bike is good to go and so am I. We're finalising the accurate distance measurement this afternoon, by calibrating a bike speedo against a survey wheel. The Event FB page is here and will be getting live updates tomorrow: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61574699634260 There is a video and a few images on the FB page. I've picked up a couple of the bikes that will be donated from Scotty Brown's, Trek Marlins, and will be displaying them at the event. They look smart and I think will be ideal for the kids to build up a range of different bike skills
