This project is a cross-community partnership between Dementia Auckland, Age Concern Auckland, Dr. Gary Cheung and his research team from the University of Auckland and specialists Dr. Yu Min Lin and Ray Law. This group has come together to blend their deep expertise with the shared vision of developing relevant and accessible services for Chinese people in Auckland whose lives are affected by dementia.

The Dementia Economic Impact Report 2021 includes research findings that Chinese people access existing dementia services the least of all ethnic groups because of factors such as lack of relevance and accessibility of resources, and cultural factors such as lack of awareness and stigma. This issue needs to be addressed urgently as the number of Asian people living with dementia is projected to more than triple from 4.8k in 2020 to 17.9k by 2040. As dementia has no cure, the person with dementia loses the ability to take care of themselves which becomes very stressful for families as they need to support the member of their family or whānau living with dementia. Local research tells us that Chinese people living with dementia and their families want to have culturally and linguistically appropriate dementia services.

To achieve better outcomes for Chinese people living with dementia and their families, priority needs to be placed on:

- increasing awareness within the Chinese community including the promotion of brain health to reduce the risk of dementia

- providing education and support for carers and families

- implementing a living well programme for Chinese people living with dementia

The Chinese Services project group and local Chinese communities will need to work together to develop and fund these services. The project is reliant on funding from grant applications and fundraising within the Chinese community as at present there is no funding from the DHBs. The project team has estimated that the total cost to fund services across Auckland for this project will be $750,000. A major funding campaign will be undertaken to raise this amount as neither Dementia Auckland or Age Concern have the resources available internally and neither organisation receives government funding to provide culturally specific services for the Asian community. Both organisations rely on charity money and grants to develop new services.

華人服務專案- 護腦同行( Caring for people with dementia together)
