The City to Sea Rail Trail - Manawatu. Enhancing the regions economy through the interlinking of cycle trails.

Manawatu / Whanganui

We are repurposing the Foxton - Longburn Railway line into The City to Sea Rail Trail - Manawatu. This G1 trail will be a completely off-road experience of 28 - 34 kilometers. Allowing commuters, tourists, and recreational users to enjoy some or all of the trail while engaging in the trails amazing Māori and European story told via QR codes, boards, sculptures and original flora. The trail will uniquely include a beach ride between Himatangi and Foxton.

This trail will eventually interlink with all the regions trails via Palmerston North. Enabling visitors and residence to enjoy all the wider region has to offer while cycling.

City to Sea Rail Trail   10 March 2026

Our goal is to launch a captivating Rail Trail [Grade 1] connecting Longburn to Himatangi and Foxton village. It will be designed to immerse visitors in the unique and intertwined stories of Māori and European heritage through interactive experiences, original flora, and eye-catching sculptures. This trail will drive sustained economic growth for rural communities [Himatangi, Foxton Village / beach, Bainesse, Rangiotu] and Palmerston North by attracting both locals and tourists.

Further Interconnected off-road cycle corridors will enable visitors to discover the region on a variety of memorable rides each day from Palmerston North, which will act as the HUB for riders and walkers.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
