Wellington

Event has unfortunately been cancellend due to covid and then other changes - please see latest update for refund details.

Overview

Members of different climate groups from different parts of Aotearoa (Like Greenpeace, Oil Free Wellington and Fem Force - Feminist Action Aotearoa) are creating a Climate Activist Retreat for Women and Marginalised Genders - but we need your help to make it happen. We want to bring together committed climate justice activists of all ages and backgrounds and create space for connection, restoration, creativity, and support. Funds raised will go towards accommodation and travel costs.

More info:

2020 must be a year of massive and unprecedented climate activism. From our years of climate organising, we know that women and marginalised genders often take on lots of undervalued care work within movements. We also know that our movements are not exempt from oppressive behaviour, and facing these can be draining while also organising. We rarely have the chance to come together, slow down, connect, and reflect with others doing climate justice activism in spaces that do not include cis-men. We also know that these spaces are important for sustaining our mahi, and part of the world we are working to create.

We are facilitating a weekend retreat on 2 - 5 April near Ōtaki. We want to help activists do their tough mahi with strength, resilience and support and gather energy for a busy year ahead. The weekend will involve experienced facilitators and organisers supporting reflection, sharing challenges, visioning possibilities, relaxing nature time, creative skillsharing and expression, and serving delicious kai. There will be space for co-creation of spaces with those attending. Howling at the moon is optional but encouraged.

The weekend is for people who identify as women, trans, non-binary, or any marginalised gender, and as committed climate activists/organisers of diverse backgrounds and ages. Because we know white women can dominate these spaces, we prioritise indigenous people and people of colour to attend and fully participate when reviewing registrations.

Since the workshop spaces are limited, we can not guarantee any space including for those who donate. If you are keen to attend this retreat, please email climateactivistretreat@gmail.com and we will send you a registration form to fill in soon. Spaces will be confirmed 5 weeks before the retreat.

Use of funds

Funds will be spent on accomodation, helping activists travel to the venue, kai, some resources for the weekend (such as art supplies) and koha for facilitators.

Latest update

rereat cancellation   21 August 2021

Kia ora,

This is an important update to everyone who so generously donated to make this retreat happen.

When we last updated you, the first covid lockdown was in full swing which meant we had to delay plans for the retreat. We planned to re-connect and make this retreat happen when it was safe for us to meet in person. We decided to try to do this in 2021. Unfortunately, despite our best intentions, life has taken each of us in different directions since Covid delayed our retreat - babies have been born, jobs have changed, locations have changed and capacity has shifted. As a collective there unfortunately isn’t the capacity among us to organise the retreat, so we have decided to cancel it at this time. We deeply apologise for not being able to come through on what we all wanted to make happen.

If you would like a refund for your generous donation - email us at climateactivistretreat@gmail.com by Monday 13th September with your bank account details and donation receipt from give-a-little and we can arrange it.

Any funds that are not refunded we will donate to the upcoming event organised by Climate Justice Taranaki and allies. This four day gathering will take place in South Taranaki in November (at the start of COP26 and as we remember Parihaka Invasion Day) and aims to upskill and connect the movement and to take direct action to stop climate polluters and demand urgent radical transformation Keep an eye out on the Climate Justice Taranaki website for more updates about the gathering. We will wait until the 13th of September to allow for any refund requests before donating remaining funds to CJT.

We once again apologise for not being able to bring this event to life and we thank you again for your help in wanting to see it happen. While this particular event may not be organised we look forward to continuing to work alongside you all towards sustainable, compassionate and healthy movements for climate and social justice in other ways and spaces.

We wish you all the best during this once again uncertain covid time and hope you are safe and with loved ones. <3
