Help us build a climbing/bouldering wall at Nayland College to boost physical activity and offer a new challenging activity for all students
Stoke, Nelson
Support the creation of a climbing and bouldering wall at Nayland College! We are keen to get more students climbing by building an indoor climbing/boulder wall. This exciting project will boost physical activity during lunchtime and morning tea breaks, providing students with a fun and challenging way to stay fit.
Climbing not only promotes physical fitness but also encourages teamwork, problem-solving, and perseverance. By backing this initiative, you’ll be helping to provide a dynamic environment where students can challenge themselves, build confidence, and enjoy their school breaks and after school time in a healthy, productive way.
The wall will also enhance our outdoor education curriculum, empowering students to become independent rock climbers who can take their skills to the stunning crags of Golden Bay. Plus, it opens the door to a new extracurricular sport, with the potential to form a climbing club and maybe even nurture future Olympians!
In the past few months, the climbing wall fundraising team has successfully raised $28,000 through bake sales, sausage sizzles, chocolate sales, and grant applications—nearly half of the project's $57,000 total cost. We're still waiting on approval for another grant that could bring us even closer to our goal.
Your contribution can help make this vision a reality—please donate today!

Tūpiki Trust backs Nayland College project 5 November 2024
The successful community fundraising completed by Nayland College has resulted in a matching dollar for dollar grant from a national climbing support trust. The NZAC Tūpiki Trust, formed almost three years ago, attracts donations from climbers who are keen to see their sport develop. The Trust then uses those funds to support projects like the climbing wall proposal from Nayland College.
“One of the first things we look for when making grant decisions is strong support from the local community, noted Tūpiki Trust Chair Ross Cullen. And in Nayland College’s application it was clear that they had the support of the Nelson community”.
“As a result of that level of commitment from the community and the Nayland College staff and students, the Tūpiki Trust has granted $29,000 toward to cost of the project as their way of contributing to the growth of the sport of climbing in the Nelson area”, Ross said.
A local climber himself, Ross chairs the Trust which, in less than three years, has granted over $2,000,000 to groups like Nayland College for projects which support all forms of climbing and the care of Aotearoa’s climbing environment.
