  • The big move!

Hi everyone, we've made the big move and settled in to our apartment in Burleigh. The page was closed and we have reopened it to keep everyone updated on progress while we're here. Coen is in his second week of therapy at The Centre Of Movement in Burleigh Heads, QLD. His botox procedure was 4 weeks ago and he can now sit with toys and play for an hour which is a lot longer than prior to the procedure. His legs seem to be a lot more relaxed which is fantastic. He will do a 3 week intensive block of therapy and then 4 hours a week ongoing with OT and physio.

We want to thank Next Steps for all their hard work and support - the team have been amazing and have helped him get to where he is today. Thank you!

While we are here, we will be looking at enrolling Coen in Mudgeeraba State Special School to assist with his learning and development. It looks like a wonderful school and we're looking forward to our visit.

We now have a lawyer working on our ACC case and will keep you updated as we get information.

Thanks so much to you all for your ongoing love and support - we appreciate it so much.

    Love Brett, Helen & Coen

  • Big changes coming for the Wylie's!

      23 April 2023

    Hi everyone

Thank you for those who have donated so far, this money has been used for Coen's last two intensive therapy sessions in Burleigh Heads, where we have seen some amazing changes.

The plan now is to have botox injected in to Coen's hip under general anaesthetic on May 11 at Tauranga Hospital. We will then head to Brisbane on June 10 to immediately start intensive therapy - he has a 3 month window of opportunity to make some significant improvements post botox.

Unfortunately, after 2.5 years, our treatment injury claim has been declined by ACC as they have stated his disability is a 'normal outcome' for his surgery. During the multiple meetings we had with neurologists and surgeons, we were never informed that such serious damage could be caused during his brain surgery, however they have admitted they have caused damage to his motor cortex during the procedure. This explains why he can't walk, talk, sit up and has no central vision etc. We are left with no other choice than to fight the ACC and appoint a lawyer who has stated his costs are approximately $25,000.00. We will need to raise this money to fight for Coen and his future.

It's been a emotional time for Brett & I but we will not give up fighting for our son.

Our upcoming costs to get Coen to therapy have put immense pressure on us financially as we live on one income. We have been living with Sally and Alan to help save money to help pay for costs ahead ie airfares, accommodation (including a bond for our apartment), purchase of a vehicle in Australia to enable Brett to work and Coen to attend therapy. We need approximately $20,000.00 before we even leave NZ.

Coen needs 24 hour care and the support and ongoing, intensive treatment just isn't available in NZ. He needs the treatment NOW as he is getting more and more difficult to lift and manage.

We will update you all after his botox procedure.

Thank you again for your on going support.

Love Brett, Helen and Coen x

  • Coen's Progress

      30 March 2023

    Wow it's nearly April already!

Yesterday we had a meeting with James regarding Coen’s impending hip surgery. Brett and I have been so stressed about this for the last month so it was good to get some answers and be able to ask questions. I asked what else can we do for Coen to help get his hip back in - his hips joints are shallow due to lack of muscle tone and movement. We only have one option left and that is botox - yes botox! Coen will need a general anaesthetic for this as they put botox in the muscles in his left leg. We then have to wait 15 days, fly to Australia and start intensives for three weeks. You only have a 12 week window to get the most therapy and physio to build up muscle tone or this treatment won't work. The botox then wears off and hopefully by that time he's managed to gain muscle tone and the hips flexors will keep his hip joints in place. We will be staying on in Australia after our three week intensive to give Coen the best chance we can as we're hoping he won't need the very invasive surgery that doctors are recommending.

His intensive therapy in Burleigh is looking to be another $20,000 but we will do whatever we can to help Coen. As you can imagine, we love him so much and just want him to have the best life.

We're still waiting for an outcome with the ACC as they are in no hurry - 2.5 years of waiting...it's such a stressful process and we thank everyone that has helped us. He had huge success at the previous two intensives and I can’t wait to see what six months will do! They are miracle workers.

    Thanks again

    Lots of love

    Brett, Helen & Coen x

  • Happy 5th Birthday Coen!

      1 March 2023
    Main image

    Hi everyone,

    Coen turned 5 on February 19 🥳

He has worked extremely hard over the past two weeks and we are now mid way through week 3. He's been doing a lot of sitting and arm work plus loading through his hips and legs - all done with many tears but we have managed to push through.

Today we are going to get a second opinion on Coen's hips - this includes X-rays. We will update on this tomorrow hopefully.

Coen did 3 minutes of sitting today and that's by far the longest he's ever managed.

On 19 March 2023, Alan and Sally's dear friend is doing a fundraiser at Mount Drury for Coen - please fee free to come down and listen to music and meet the Wylie family.

Thank you again for all of your support and well wishes throughout our journey. We have just entered our fifth year and can't wait to watch Coen's progress.

    Love, The Wylie's

  • Hello 2023 and big changes!

      16 January 2023

Happy New Year everyone! We're looking forward to our year ahead with Coen and can't wait to see what he achieves. We thought we would update everyone before we head back over for another block of intensive rehabilitation.

Coen will be returning to the Centre of Movement on the 13th of February 2023. We can’t wait to see what they have in store for him. Unfortunately Centre of Movement have had a price rise - it's now $200.00 per hour for private clients. They have been really accomodating and kept our cost at $150.00 per hour for the February sessions but we're not sure about our costs for June 2023.

Over Christmas Brett and I have decided that we will have to move out of our home and move to Brett's parents house for the 12 months. This is so we can save to pay for Coen's therapy in Australia as year ahead is going to cost $45,000 for his treatment. We are really sad to be moving but just can’t manage on one income and we know it’s the best decision for Coen and will get him the help he needs and deserves.

We are still battling with the ACC and have now been in touch with Tamiti Coffey MP. His team and are now looking into our correspondence with he ACC as it’s been ongoing for two years.

Coen will be turning 5 on the 19th of February and we're hoping to take him to Sea World to enjoy his milestone.

Thankyou everyone for your ongoing support to help us get Coen better.

We will update our page weekly during our next intensive block.

    Love the Wylie's .

  • Week Three - Leaps and bounds!

      28 November 2022
    Main image

    Hi everyone

Our third and last week - boy what an amazing 3 weeks it's been! Coen has had to do a lot of hard work and has given it 100% throughout the whole time he's been attending his sessions. We are so proud of him.

This week we saw lots of work on his left hand side to get that arm free and he has had lots of myofacial release. A nero stem was used on his arm (get googling!) and it really helped free the muscles in his left arm.

The centre have given us a home program to do over the next 12 weeks before we head back in February 2023. We are still uncertain as to what we will do but have been contemplating a fundraiser next year if ACC still won't be of any assistance. If you have any suggestions, please contact myself or Helen - we're open to any ideas you may have.

We took Coen to Australia Zoo on Saturday as a treat for being an absolute star over the past few weeks. We got home last night and are straight back in to hospital appointments and back to the gym on Wednesday.

Thanks so much to everyone that helped us get Coen to much needed therapy. The progress he's made in such a short time is fantastic and we're looking forward to what intensive therapy brings in 2023.

We hope everyone has a nice Christmas and New Year.

    Love from The Wylie's.

  • Week Two Catch-Up

      19 November 2022
    Main image

    Hi everyone,

Coen has done extremely well this week with a lot less tears. Each day they push him harder to find his centre of gravity and reflexes as he lost these during surgery. He has also been working hard to be in a sitting position by using his arms to support himself.

At 4am Wednesday morning Coen had a seizure that lasted approximately one minute. We haven't had one in a very long time and are hoping it's a one off.

During the week Helen and Brett had a chat with Coen's OT and they discussed what he will require going forward. The outcome of this meeting was that Coen will need therapy four times a week for two years if we want to see progression. After this conversation, Coen was booked in for another block of therapy in February 2023. This week has been so positive for all of us and we will keep pushing forward to do the best we can for Coen as he has shown remarkable progress in the short time he has been in therapy.

Thank you for all of your support as we wouldn't have this opportunity without everyone helping us.

  • Week One done and dusted!

      12 November 2022

    Hi everyone

Coen has done extremely well during his first week - many tears but he's been working so hard.

Brett and Helen have noticed that he is playing on his tummy with toys - before rehabilitation, he would just roll around on the ground and not try to get to the toys. They have been working hard to get Coen in to a sitting position and getting him to also get out of the sitting position to lying down without hurting himself. He's learning to use his arms and hands as well as working on the four points.

Helen and Brett are really happy with Coen's progress and everyone is really looking forward to seeing what next week brings.

By the end of the day, Coen is very tired but will enjoy a swim or two during his break before doing it all again.

Thank you all for your ongoing support - we will update again this time next week.

    Hi everyone

Firstly, I'd like to thank each and every one of you that have donated. Brett, Helen and Coen appreciate it immensely.

Coen has his first day of therapy today and there were a lot of tears.

We have been told today that Coen will also need to attend intensive therapy in February and June/July of 2023.

All your help to date has gone such a long way and we will update weekly on a Friday to share Coen's progress.

    Thanks again
