Getting Coen to intensive treatment
Papamoa, Bay Of Plenty
Coen was born on February 19, 2018. On March 24, 2018 at 5 weeks, Coen began having seizures and was hospitalised immediately.
The link to Coen's previous givealitte page is below and has a summary of his history:
https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/baby-coen-wylie
At 6 months old, Coen had a TPO (Temporal occipital parietal) disconnection. When this procedure was carried out, the surgeon cut too far forward in the frontal lobe and this has affected Coen's eyesight - he now only has peripheral vision. Now at 4.5 years old he cannot sit, walk or talk. There is no cover by ACC as they are blaming the seizures for his regression but the surgeon has admitted to inaccuracy whilst performing the surgery. We are in a place where ACC isn't wanting to admit that surgery was the cause of his disabilities.
Unfortunately the medical and therapeutic support in New Zealand has not provided the ongoing intensive help required for Coen's needs. Out of desperation Coen's parents and grandparents took him to Brisbane for an assessment and to look at further treatment options. The Centre Of Movement in Burleigh Heads is a Paediatric Neurological Rehabilitation Centre and have suggested 3 weeks of intensive treatment in November to help him with sitting and walking.
Logistically and financially this is a huge decision and commitment for Coen's parents. I know everyone wants the very best for Coen and many would like the opportunity to further support Coen in his journey ahead.

The big move! 19 June 2023
Hi everyone, we've made the big move and settled in to our apartment in Burleigh. The page was closed and we have reopened it to keep everyone updated on progress while we're here. Coen is in his second week of therapy at The Centre Of Movement in Burleigh Heads, QLD. His botox procedure was 4 weeks ago and he can now sit with toys and play for an hour which is a lot longer than prior to the procedure. His legs seem to be a lot more relaxed which is fantastic. He will do a 3 week intensive block of therapy and then 4 hours a week ongoing with OT and physio.
We want to thank Next Steps for all their hard work and support - the team have been amazing and have helped him get to where he is today. Thank you!
While we are here, we will be looking at enrolling Coen in Mudgeeraba State Special School to assist with his learning and development. It looks like a wonderful school and we're looking forward to our visit.
We now have a lawyer working on our ACC case and will keep you updated as we get information.
Thanks so much to you all for your ongoing love and support - we appreciate it so much.
Love Brett, Helen & Coen
