"Con Artist" Auckland Armageddon 2017

Wait, WHAT! Isn’t a con artist a bad person who swindles you out of money and belongs?

Well yes, that kind of con artist is a bad person.

But when I say “Con Artist” I mean a Convention Artist; an artist who travels the country going from one event to another selling their illustrations and services. Many of these shows are game, anime, comic, art or other special interest shows such as Comic-con.

Here in New Zealand we have an event called Armageddon Expo. It’s held 4 times a year and combines gaming, anime, comics, film, art or other special interest into one big show. For example this October’s event will have special guests Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), Nathan Fillion (Castle, Firefly) and many more, along with events, cosplay, competitions and “Con Artists”.

And this is where my journey will begin. In October across 3 and half days I will be selling my illustrations to the public for the first time. I have a 1.8m wide by 1.5m deep space with table, chair and partitions and it is very exciting. I’ve already paid for the space, flights and accommodation but there is still a lot I need to do in terms of prep, other than draw A LOT.

I’m not big on asking for help when it comes to money but I’ve been working a casual job for the last four months which is only just helping to keep me a float. A friend suggested Go Fund Me and so I am giving it ago.

Since graduating from my degree 2 yrs ago I’ve been tossing up my options for the real world. I’ve tried to satisfy my family by getting an everyday job to pay the bills and live; but truth be told that’s been a nightmare and it’s never made me happy. Drawing makes me happy; and drawing for others is exciting.
