We have never liked asking for help but the devastation of our house and life savings, any help would be amazing. Thank you very much

Hawke's Bay

Just last week they held a housewarming party to celebrate the completion of their new riverside home.

On Thursday the river burst its banks, sending water and mud all through Chris and Saowanee's two-bedroom home in Rissington, about 25 kilometres inland from Napier.

Chris, a vineyard worker, was home when the flash flood struck, about 8am, and said it rose with an intensity he had never seen before.

Chris and Saowanee's newly built house in Rissington, Hawke's Bay, is now covered in a thick layer of mud and silt.

"There's just nothing left. All the effort we put into building it --gone".

The couple started building in June 2017, and the house was finished just before Christmas. Now, with only home but no contents insurance, the couple 's future at the property is uncertain. There is now a thick layer of muds surrounding the entire house.

"I just want to walk away and never come back", he said
