Courtney is one of the friendliest, kindest souls on earth and deserves to have this eye saving surgery, only available in Australia.
Taranaki
Courtney's life was journeying beautifully, meeting her fiance Ryan four years ago and having two precious daughters Lainey (2) and Tilly (4 months) until what was believed to be minimal damage from a scratch to her left eye unraveled something more challenging...
Courtney's story:
I have a lesion or tumor growing out of my optic nerve, that has possibly been there my entire life, but in the last 2 years, grown significantly and has now reduced my vision to borderline blind.
Due to the proximity and high risks associated with removing it, and to give me the best possible chance of regaining or retaining my current vision, my specialist is referring me to the best surgeon available in Australasia who will access the tumor through my nose.
The surgery is only available in Adelaide and I need to be there for a few days before surgery and then unable to fly for two weeks post surgery.
As heartbreaking and hard as it will be, it means leaving my babies for almost 3 weeks in a months time.
Due to Courtney being a stay at home mum and maternity leave almost up, her family will be back to a single income for a family of four. The opportunity for this possible eye saving surgery is phenomenal but also a huge financial pressure.
Although having unlimited cover in NZ for surgery, the international cover is limited. Her insurance company will cover the costs of surgery, but has said she will need to pay the costs first before reimbursing her. Neither the insurance company or health system will cover accommodation therefore the fundraised money will help cover $5,500 for flights and accommodation.
The thing Courtney wants most is to beable to watch her baby girls grow with clear vision again and the security of knowing the lesion or tumor will not grow or cause any more damage.
Thankyou for opening your hearts.
Courtney and I have been besties for 25 years! We met when we were 13 and have been inseperable friends ever since, through all life's beautiful and challenging times 🖤
The funds will pay for the flights and accommodation in Adelaide approx $5,500 and possible post surgery expenses.
Any excess funds will be donated to the Blind Low Vision Organisation
Update - We have a Surgery Date! 20 August 2020
Hi everyone,
We finally got there!
Last week Ryan and I met with a Wellington Neurosurgeon who along with his ENT colleague will perform the same surgery as that proposed by Adelaide!
I then travelled to Wellington again this week and spoke with the ENT surgeon about the surgical procedure.
After listening to my story both the Neurosurgeon and ENT Surgeon were frustrated to hear of my journey and wondered why I hadn't been referred to them from the beginning. Both felt I had had a pretty raw deal.
But finally and thankfully surgery is booked.
I will be having Surgery through the nose on Sept 10 2020. The surgery will see me in hospital for up to 5 days, followed by 6-8wks post op recovery.
The ENT surgeon has advised that as it is a risky surgery, he will work on caution. As we don't know what it is and if it is cancerous or not, they will only know if I require additional treatment (chemo or radiation etc) once they have completed a biopsy.
I have also registered with Blind & Low Vision NZ (Blind Foundation) who will be in touch soon to advise how they may be able to assist me.
I have two further trips to Wellington for a CT & MRI as well as an appointment with another Ophthalmologist.
We are again eternally grateful for the funds donated and although they are not being used for travel & accommodation in Adelaide, it has been helping us with the travel & accommodation around NZ.
It will be used to house my wonderful supportive Ryan during the week of surgery too. So thank you again x
Much love
