Update for 26/03/2012  26 March 2012

Superintendent Russell Gibson 37 years policing experience. General duties constable in Auckland and detective sergeant in the Auckland CIB. Transferred as senior sergeant as O/C station Whangarei in 1988. in 1991 promoted to Inspector at Police National Headquarters. In 1995 appointed to Manager, Human Resources at Central Police District in Palmerston North. In May 2007 relieved as Acting Superintendent National Manager Training at the Royal New Zealand Police College and in November 2007 to date is District Commander Central District. I am married with three grown up children, two of whom work in Wellington and one in Australia. My motivation for being involved in this stems from the loss of both my parents, my father in law and a number of other friends over recent years to this terrible disease and anything I can do that may go some way to helping I am only to pleased to do so. Thanks. S/Sgt Brett Calkin, Prevention Manager, Palmerston North Police. ""Canteen is a charity that is very close to my heart. When I was 19 I had to have several lumps on my neck cut out for biopsy. The doctors initially suspected lymphoma but fortunately it wasn't cancer. I remember that the three days that I had to wait for the biopsy results were incredibly frightening. That was a lot to go through as a 19 year so I can only imagine how hard it is for a young person who actually has the disease. I've got three kids and I pray that they never have to experience it."" Sgt Michael Yates, Community Group Supervisor (Roslyn), Palmerston North Police. I have had several friends that have recently passed away due to cancer, also my mother and a close friend have been diagnosed with cancer and are presently receiving treatment. I am supporter of Canteen and look forward to having my head shave Phillip Ward, Community Group Supervisor (Highbury), Palmerston North Police. My nickname is 'Milo'. I've been in the Police for the past 16 years. I'm very happy to support CanTeen and proud to be shaving my heard for such a worthy cause. Cancer affects many families throughout our community and the support, education and recreational programmes provided by CanTeen to empower young people living with cancer is absolutely superb. Remember CanTeen do not receive any government funding and are totally reliant on your generosity and donations, so sponsor me for CanTeen. Sgt Darren Paki, Maori Liaison Officer, Palmerston North Police. Darren grew up in Palmerston North but after graduating from Police College in 2003 he elected to serve in Wairoa due to family ties in the Area. Darren returned to Palmerston North in 2007 were he worked on frontline and later in the Community Group. Darren is the now the Pouwhakataki (Iwi Liaison Officer) based out of the Palmerston North Police Station. Darren has whakapapa ties to Muaupoko, Ngati Porou and Ngati Whatua. Darren is shaving his head for canteen because he believes that all wh?nau deserve the chance to watch their kids develop and grow - ""These kids and their wh?nau have an inner strength that most of us can't comprehend. If shaving my head contributes in some small way then by all means shave away."" D/Sgt Simon Harrison, Child Protection Team Supervisor, Palmerston North CIB. I have three children who I am thankful are all healthy. My youngest son really wanted me to be involved in this cause and when we recently learnt that a young relative on my wife's side was admitted to Starship hospital with Leukaemia I wanted to be involved. I now have to convince my wife to let my 10 year old son shave his head as well.D/Sgt Ashley Gurney, Strategic Crime Group, Palmerston North CIB. Ash is the officer in Charge of the Strategic Crime Group. He is married with two Sgt Phillip Ward, Community Group Supervisor (Highbury), Palmerston North Police. children. Ash very involved with the local community particularly through sports and his kids school. He is always willing to give up his time for a worthy cause and was keen to be involved with CanTeen. ""Cancer is a disease that is incredibly difficult to deal with emotionally even for fully mature adults. I can only imagine how hard it is for a teenager to cope with. I think CanTeen does some amazing things to help these young people cope with the enormity of having a life threatening disease at such a difficult time in their lives."" Const Sue Gregory, Youth Education Officer, Palmerston North Police. Sue is a Youth Education Officer which means that she spends a lot of time in schools teaching kids how to be safe. She is well known in many of the local Primary Schools. Sue was one of the first officers to volunteer to have her head shaved to raise money for CanTeen. Her attitude and commitment to this event are simply awesome. When volunteering she said ""It's the least I can do. Having my head shaved is nothing compared to what these young people go through."" Det Konrad Tamati, Child Protection Team, Palmerston North CIB. Konrad is a Detective on the Child Protection Team. He is married with 2 children. He was one of the first to volunteer to have his head shaved. Konrad is always will to give up his time (and his hair) for a good cause. Det Nick Lawton, Child Protection Team, Palmerston North CIB. Nick is a detective on the Child Protection Team. He is married with 3 kids and is very family orientated. He happily volunteered to have his head shaved for this worthy cause and he challenged the other members of the Child Protection Team to do the same. Det James Bugg, Child Protection Team, Palmerston North CIB. ""I'm a Detective with 12 years service. Everyone calls me 'Buggsy' I think this is a very worthwhile cause as I had two close family members die of cancer. It's also a charity that I am happy to support as I have two teenager children. When I was asked to support CanTeen and have my head shaved was not a tough decision. Det Laurie Howell, Adult Sexual Assault Team, Palmerston North CIB. ""Having 3 kids helps you realise that you never know when something could to happen to them. As a dad I would like to know that if something did happen there are people out there willing to support them when things got tough. So please skip your flat white and cake today and chuck five or ten bucks to a good cause. Thanks"" Const Warwick Denby, Strategic Traffic Unit, Palmerston North Police. I've been in the Police for 12 years. I'm married with 2 kids. I am really keen to support canteen and raise money for them because my father died of cancer 13 years ago. Const Scott McLiesh, Strategic Traffic Unit, Palmerston North Police. ""Scott has been in the Police 10 years. I have been really lucky that none of my family have been affected by cancer and I can only imagine how difficult that it is to have cancer or have a family suffering from cancer. I am proud to be taking part in this event to raise money for such a worthy cause."" Const Matt McFlynn, Strategic Traffic Unit, Palmerston North Police. ""I have been in the Police for 6 years. Some members of my extended family have been affected by cancer so I think this is a great cause and an opportunity for me to get involved with a cancer charity. Getting my head shaved is the least I can do to help out.... besides the difference between a good hair cut and a bad one is only 3 weeks."" Const Michael Linton, Emergency Response Group, Section 3, Palmerston North Police. I've been in the Police for 18 months now and I'm really enjoying it. I think that CanTeen is a great cause and I'm happy to do anything to help raise money for young people suffering from this terrible disease Jason was keen to be involved with raising money for CanTeen and thinks that CanTeen is a great cause. Jason is always one of the first to volunteer for any event which involves helping other people especially children and young people. Const Dave Schmidt, Emergency Response Group, Section 1, Palmerston North Police. Dave volunteered immediately for this project. He doesn't have a lot of hair but he is happy to loose it all for a great cause like CanTeen. He is always happy to serve the community in any way he can. Constable Ross Andrew, Scene Of Crime Officer, Palmerston North Police Forensic Section. I've been in the Police for 12 and a half years and I'm known as Rosco by most people I meet. I'm currently working as a Scene of Crime Officer in Palmerston North, some of the people I work with are calling me the dusting fairy, bless them. I'm doing this as my step daughter, Sarah was diagnosed with a brain tumour a few years back. But luckily through an awesome surgeon and team at Starship she is still with us, and is a current member of the Canteen group. (she's going to be away when the ""Cropped Cops"" is on, so I can't embarrass her on stage). Loosing my hair on stage to the clippers is the least I can do for this good cause.
