Grant and Zane were part of a Kiwi Can lesson at Havelock School - the lesson was focused on Reliability - "always doing what we say we will and others knowing they can rely on us" (in other words, no sleeping in the back of the kayak!!)

You wouldn't want to tackle a challenge like this without a solid support crew... sharing knowledge and helpful tips; introducing (from left) Jodie and Dan Moore (multisport legends - well, one has slightly more experience - www.danmoore.co.nz), and Aaron Price (with partner Nat, co-owner of Sea Kayak Adventures - www.nzseakayaking.com).

Aaron and Nat are kindly providing Zane and Grant with kayaks and associated gear for all their training and the actual crossing. These guys are amazing, if you're looking to do anything in the Marlborough Sounds - kayaking, walking or mountain biking - talk to them!

Sitting in the Sanford’s staffroom pondering ways to fundraise for Kiwi Can, Zane Charman wondered what it would be like to kayak across the Cook Strait. Sitting across from him, Grant Boyd’s attention was roused “yep, we’re doing that”… and there was no going back!!

    Fundraising for Kiwi Can

Sanford is a key partner of Kiwi Can throughout New Zealand. In Marlborough, Sanford staff have taken on all sorts of challenges (ie abseiled off buildings and jumped out of planes) to raise money for the programme locally. Kiwi Can is delivered in schools around the Marlborough Sounds, so the idea of a kayaking challenge fundraiser has a great connection with the programme itself.

Kiwi Can is a values and life-skills programme for kids aged 5-12 years. Fun, interactive lessons focus on important themes such as respect, integrity and resilience. Research shows that Kiwi Can builds self-confidence, reduces bullying and reinforces positive behaviour. All funds raised through ‘Crossing the Cook’ will go toward the delivery costs of the Kiwi Can programme to over 700 kids every week across the region.
