Defending my freedom of speech
Auckland
Earlier this year an Instagram user posted a public campaign on their account that greatly offended me.
I reacted to the campaign with Instagram posts, stories and comments. I was deeply affected, and felt compelled to speak out, as it triggered memories for me of my own experience of domestic violence.
The user has now filed court proceedings against me alleging that i have breached the Harmful Digital Communications Act. I am defending the allegations as I deny breaching the Act.
I also consider the case concerns important issues relating to my right to freedom expression under the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act. I feel that the use of legal proceedings is an attempt to curb those rights. The Court has made orders preventing me from discussing the case (with the exception of this page) so I cannot provide further details at this stage.
I am a self-employed designer and simply can not afford the cost of a lawyer to defend myself. All the other parties have lawyers. I would like to continue using my usual lawyer but they do not provide legal aid.
Funds raised will be used to cover my legal fees. Any excess funds (after my lawyers fees are paid) will be donated to the Women's Refuge.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
