The Dunedin Curtain Bank assist low income families, less able and elderly keep warm by providing quality thermally lined curtains.

Otago

Curtains are collected from a number of sources, individuals, businesses, hotels/motels/hostels, relined if necessary and distributed via our referral system or direct contact (community service card holders or primary health care organisations).

Whilst curtains are donated to the Curtain Bank each curtain comes at a cost, ie the Curtain Bank collects, sorts, measures, and lines curtains. The Curtain Bank currently has one part time paid coordinator and approximately 6-10 regular volunteers.

The Curtain Bank needs more funds to help pay for their premises, internet, telephone, current paid employee as well as needing more paid staff.

Each pair of curtains put into a house costs the Dunedin Curtain Bank $68. Some houses have 1-3 pairs on curtains in a lounge and 1-2 pairs of curtains in up to 3 bedrooms - that is 3-8 pairs of curtains per house costing the curtain bank $204-$544 per house to put warm thermally lined curtains in.

Thermally lined curtains are the cheapest and easiest way to keep a house warm. They stop heat loss therefore assisting with fuel poverty and allowing families to have money to spend on other essential items like food and clothing. They assist with health and well being in a home as well as providing privacy.

Please help us to make Dunedin's older housing stock warmer by donating.

About us

The Dunedin Curtain Bank up-cycles unwanted and unused curtains, lines them, and distributes them to those in need in our community.

Why we do it?

Curtains make a significant difference to the warmth of a home. A third of all heat loss in an uninsulated home occurs through windows. Even double-glazed windows let out more heat than uninsulated walls.

Winter is Coming!  22 February 2016

That sounds suspiciously like Game of Thrones. But it is certainly true.

Have you ever lived in a house without adequate curtains, i.e. no thermal lining or no curtains. There are quite a few people out there who do. We all know how cold it can get in Dunedin and our homes can be cold and take a lot of heating even when they have insulation and curtains so imagine what it is like for those who don't have either.

We would love for you to donate a little (or a lot if you fancy) to help us get curtains into those cold, damp houses.
