Cyberknife surgery to treat a growing brain tumor.
Mount Wellington, Auckland
At just 25, my sister Jaime was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2), though her journey began even earlier. At 20, she underwent a 12-hour brain surgery to remove a brain tumor from her left acoustic nerve. While the operation saved her life, it resulted in complete hearing loss in her left ear.
After years of ongoing treatment, constant scans, and careful monitoring, Jaime is now 42. She’s married and has recently welcomed her daughter Casey who is now five months old.
Today, she is facing another challenge, a growing acoustic neuroma on the right side of her brain. To prevent further hearing loss and avoid invasive brain surgery, her medical team has recommended highly precise radiation treatment. While a government funded option is available in Dunedin, it does not offer the same level of accuracy as CyberKnife surgery available in Auckland at Auckland Radiation Oncology, an option that will significantly improve her outcome.
The cost of this specialised treatment is around $40,000, which is currently out of their reach. I understand that times are tough for many, but any contribution, no matter how small, would make a meaningful difference. Your support would help Jaime access this life changing procedure and protect the hearing she still has.
Jaime and I grew up so close, doing the same sports, dressing the same, joined at the hip. But somehow she has drawn the short straw with all of this. She has been so strong throughout her journey, I would have crumbled! This is just a small way I can help
All funds go toward CyberKnife surgery at Auckland Radiation Oncology.
