Dad's Showing his Stroke who's Boss

I am super inspired by my Dad and his determination to complete the 5km Auckland Challenge, post paralysing stroke.

Auckland

I want you to try something for me for a moment. If you’re wearing shoes with laces, undo one, and then try to do it up again with only one hand. Then try to put a sweatshirt on with one hand. Then try to do up the buckle on a belt with one hand. It’s difficult, trust me I know. And someone who knows this probably more than anyone, is my Dad.

On Christmas Day 2014, Dad suffered a freak stroke that would change his and his family’s lives more than we’d ever know.

He lost all movement in his left side, and all vision in his right eye. Three months in Middlemore hospital using a transfer machine to get him out of bed, led to another three months in a wheelchair, to twelve months using a stick, and now he’s finally back walking on his own.

This Christmas will mark four years, and it’s been a goal of his to walk a decent distance, and then to one day run one. Dad used to run marathons. His personal best is 2’32” and if you know anything about marathons you’ll know that’s bloody good! Right up until the stroke he was playing soccer twice a week and exercising almost every other day.

So, his day to walk will be on October 28th. Dad has registered to do the 5km Challenge in Auckland and he is walking to fundraise for his chosen charity - Laura Fergusson Rehabilitation.

This is where I come in. I am walking alongside Dad, but not for a charity. I’m walking for him. Dad is so selfless and would never put himself first, but in my eyes HE is the hero and HE is the one that deserves a bit of support thrown his way.

Over the past three and a half years we have received little to no support, especially financially. Who knew that a stroke isn’t classed as an accident, and therefore ACC never came to the party? Who knew that a stroke will eventually force you to close your own business, downsize houses and practically live week to week?

Every little bit counts and I would be SO grateful to anyone who can contribute! However if you would like to instead donate to Dad’s chosen programme, who I must add, helped him tremendously at the beginning of his rehabilitation journey, then follow the link below.

Dad is walking 5km for the Laura Fergusson Rehabilitation, but in my eyes HE is the hero and I want to raise money for HIM!

Use of funds

Dad dreams of one day being able to partake in a stem-cell experiment, or afford to experiment with robotics and prosthetics. Stem-cell treatment for stroke is injected into the brain which isn't practiced in New Zealand so he would have to travel overseas; ideally to Stanford University in Northern California. Every cent that I raise will go into Dad’s stroke fund, not into power or mortgages or food, but into a fund that he can use specifically for his own research and rehabilitation.

He did it!  29 October 2018

Dad officially completed the 5km challenge yesterday, walking 5km in 1'34 which was smack bang in the middle of his goal time.

We just want to thank everyone who has donated to this cause. I personally have been so overwhelmed, seeing the emails come through day after day, and seeing the generous amounts some of you have given has just absolutely blown my mind. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for showing Dad how inspirational he is, and for continuing to let him be so! <3
