Our good friends here in Gisborne, Clint and Rachel Daly literally lost everything in Cyclone Gabrielle.
They narrowly escaped their completely flooded family home with the clothes on their backs, and a few small possessions.
‘Salt of the earth’ is a saying that has been shared around in recent times, and Clint & Rach are the physical definition.
They’ve worked hard for everything they have, always willing to give to others without a second thought, enjoyed entertaining friends and family in their home, and have raised two well rounded adult children.
As they were still coming to terms with the reality of their situation, a few of us headed over to help them retrieve some personal items from their red stickered whare.
I grabbed a few tools, and gumboots, but I also randomly grabbed my camera bag, and asked them if it would be ok to shoot something.
Hopefully this footage puts into perspective the huge impact and displacement that the recent weather events have had on the people here in Te Tairāwhiti.
People have lost everything, their homes, livelihoods, animals, and in some cases, loved ones.
