Helping to rebuild kindy's in Vanuatu after cyclone Harold caused major devastation and damage to over 100 kindy's in the Sanma Province.

International

On April 6, 2020, Tropical Cyclone Harold caused major devastation across Vanuatu.

In the Sanma province where we are based over 100 kindy's were flattened or badly damaged.

The communities need our help so they can rebuild their kindy's so the pikinini (children) can continue their classes.

In Vanuatu kindy's do not get government funding, they are the responsibility of the community to build them, resource them and manage them. This is extremely difficult at this time when the families have lost their houses, gardens and their livelihood!

Talvenbis Kindy, in Luganville, is a kindy we have a long association with. We first met Betty & Peter in 2012 and we have watched their kindy grow in numbers as they have added extensions to their kindy building to accommodate over 30 pikinini. Sadly their kindy was flattened by Tropical Cyclone Harold. But further to this, Betty and her 3 children came through the cyclone alone as Peter is in NZ for RSE seasonal work. With the Covid situation, Peter has extended his contract for a further 6 months, so he can also earn some more money to rebuild their kindy.

Our goal is to help Betty & Peter and their community to rebuild their kindy in time for the start of the school year February 2021.

We hope you will be able to help us to reach this goal and share this journey with us.

About our Charity

To date after cyclone Pam Pacific Pathways has focused on helping with the rebuild & recovery by rebuilding damaged schools and building kindy's/preschools that had been flattened by cyclone Pam on Paama Island.

We are based on Aore Island, just off Santo. We were here in April and experienced our first category 5 cyclone first hand, we woke to the devastation and the stress faced by the families as they wondered how they would manage to put food on the table. Since April we have been helping the communities on Aore to recover and rebuild, with our 'Families First" initiative. This is focusing on on their immediate needs: food ( re-establish their gardens)/ water / shelter & as we come into the cyclone season ' preparedness' should we experience another cyclone.

We are also working with three kindy's that were flattened or badly damaged by cyclone Harold. Helping them to raise the funds so they can rebuild their kindy's.

Pacific Pathways have been helping in Vanuatu since 2010. Our first project was in fact to build the new school on Aore Island, Bernier Bay School which is now called the Aore Yumi Community Primary School. The seed was planted and Pacific Pathways was born. You can learn more about our story on our website.

The funds raised through Give a Little will be used 100 % on our recovery/rebuilding projects in Vanuatu.
