dollhouse stages The Mystery of Irma Vep at the Dunedin Arts Festival

Otago

In our very first year of existence, and only our second production, we've been personally invited by the Director of the Dunedin Arts Festival, who said in his announcement 'We are proud to have invited this new emerging local theatre company onboard for #DAF22 and excited to see some massive talent come out.'

This is a huge opportunity and a gigantic step up for the company and we couldn't possibly turn it down. And it means we need you!

The Mystery of Irma Vep is a side-splitting comedy, where all the residents of the Mandacrest estate travel from the moors of England to the tombs of Egypt and back again, encountering along their way a host of vampires, werewolves, mummies and all manner of things that go bump in the night. Just in time for Hallowe’en, dollhouse, Ōtepoti-Dunedin’s newest theatre company, return this modern classic of camp to the stage.

It's a Hallowe'en comedy with a bite!

Two performers handle 14 or more characters and at least 42 costume changes (and running)! What happens when Wuthering Heights; Sherlock Holmes in Hound of the Baskervilles; The Mummy; and Rocky Horror Picture Show have a baby? Our show!

'A true vaudeville tour de farce... It's wonderful.' -Time

'A hearty mixture of thrills, laughter and extravagant showmanship.' -The Village Voice

Use of funds

We're taking this show back to its roots in low-budget, big heart theatre. You'll be helping to fund production rights; costume sourcing and construction; set design; publicity; and venue hire (which includes the extra time to rehearse costume changes!)

Very important update - season cancellation and we need your help!  18 October 2022

As many of you may have heard, we at dollhouse are, no hyperbole, absolutely devastated to have to cancel our season of _The Mystery of Irma Vep_. From acting to design to vision to the sum of its parts, it is looking amazing!

But a significant health emergency has arisen and because of this we are not in a position to proceed. We are devastated, to say the least. However, we cannot put our creatives and our audience at risk particularly while COVID continues to present itself and is in the mix here. These are not our core values as dollhouse.

Where you come in is that if you are willing to maintain your donation to our Givealittle, or you know anyone who would be willing to donate what would have been their ticket price to our Givealittle, it would help us pay down the debts that we already had to incur to get us to this point. The expenses are already there.

We will, of course, no longer have our box office income, and because it is a season cancellation, another funding grant that we had secured, of a significant sum, is now taken off the table because it is withdrawn in the event of a cancellation.

Aside from helping so much with our financial stability as company only just tying up its first year, you'll also be helping us because we have big news on the horizon. With your help as a community of dollhouse dear ones, if we weather this storm, we'll have a new show announcement very, very soon.

If you are no longer willing to retain your donation because we have had to cancel the season, no judgment and please message us and we will do everything we can.

Thanks for reading, thanks for being you, and thanks for being with us.

xxoo

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
