Undertake upgrading of Dorset Ridge hut in Tararua Forest Park so that it is availalble for future use by trampers and hunters.
Wellington
We are seeking funding to give Dorset Ridge hut an upgrade that will see the hut preserved for another 55 years. The hut is one of the orginal Forest Service deerculling huts that were built in the 1960s in Tararua. The hut has been modified to make it more livable for trampers and hunters. The GWBN are intending to install new windows and repair damage from water leakage. The GWBN is contributing funding for the work, and the Backcountry Trust has also made a generous contribution to the work. So that we can complete improvements to the hut which will include recladding the exterior with Colour Steel, we need to raise an additional $7,000. We are hoping to raise $3000 of that through give a little.
Dorset Ridge is located in the headwaters of the Waiohine river, and while use is not high, it is one of the many remote huts that are essential for trampers and hunters enjoyment of this remote and challenging area of Tararua. The GWBN aim is to ensure that ALL backcountry huts are retained for future generations. We have an extensive track maintenance program as well, that so far has improved over 450 kilometers of tramping tracks in Tararua. Our aim is to also ensure that all of the comprehensive track network in Tararua and the other local forest parks is there for all to enjoy.
we encourage recreational use in local forest parks by maintaining tracks and huts and fostering volunteer participation in the care of the forest parks
The funding will be used to repair damage from water leakage and replace the exterior cladding of the hut with Colour Steel. One of the major costs will be helicopter hire to transport materials
