Restore Alpha hut on the Tararua Southern Crossing.
The Greater Wellington Backcountry Network (GWBN) is a charitable society that has a key object
to foster backcountry recreation within the Tararua, Aorangi and Remutaka forest parks
through maintaining and building huts and tracks.
Tararua Forest Park is the major wilderness area in the lower region and it is a key objective of the GWBN to encourage recreation so that more visitors connect with our natural heritage and gain an appreciation of the need for the protection and preservation of the environment.
Alpha is the key hut project for our volunteers this comming summer. The hut is a key destination on the well know Southern Crossing and is over due to maintenance due to deterioation of several areas of the hut that need to be fixed before even more funds are needed for repairs.
we encourage recreational use in local forest parks by maintaining tracks and huts, fostering volunteer participation in track and hut upkeep
Repairs to roofing, exterior cladding, leaks, unsafe fixtures. Will include transport of material by helicopter and building materials.
Alpha hut fund raising 17 November 2023
Thanks to everyone who donated to our Give a Little page for Alpha hut repairs. A total of $1,485 was raised through the page. Additionally, we received $1,100 in donations direct through our GWBN website.
This will help get the popular Alpha hut looking good again, hopefully done in January or February 2024.
Check out our Face Book page or website for progress on Alpha and our other maintenance projects planned for this summer.
