Fundraising for books and school supplies for Dream Elementary School in Zambia.
Canterbury
I am currently volunteering in Zambia for three months.
I am teaching at Dream Elementary School just out of Livingstone. To go to school in Zambia families must pay. This means a lot of children from poor families do not have the opportunity to go to school. Dream Elementary school has been set up by a local group called Dream Livingstone who wanted to create a school where students could go to learn for free. The school currently has 3 classrooms and their are 2 paid local teachers. The third classroom is taught by volunteers (this is the senior classroom). The school mainly relies on volunteers to provide basic stationary- pencils, crayons, workbooks etc. I am currently co-teaching the senior class with another volunteer who has been here for 10 weeks. One of the main needs she has identified in the school are classroom books/readers for the students. Most of the students are just learning how to read and the books that are there are far too advanced for them.
We have found a school supplier in South Africa who has a variety of beginning reader books based on living in Africa. We are wanting to purchase sets of 6 books for the school. These books are quite cheap (around $1 each) plus postage. We would also like to purchase some lockable cupboards to store the books in. Any donations would be hugely appreciated! $5 would be a great help!!!
I am volunteering at Dream Elementary Primary School for 12 weeks.
-purchase sets of readers/books for the students.
-purchase a lockable cupboard to store books in.
- purchase workbooks/glue/stationary/art supplies for the school.
-if there is any left over money I will donate it to Dream Livingstone to help with the construction of the new school.
Thank You 13 June 2017
Thank you so much for all your donations!! It has been so cool to be able to help purchase a few things for the school!!
I have added some pictures to the gallery of things I have bought 😊
These included:
-workbooks
-guided reading books
- pens/pencils/scissors/glue/tape etc
-school trip to Victoria Falls
- clipboards
- Storage shelves/buckets/containers/cupboard
I also gave $120 to the local elderly care home to purchase 3 mattresses. Volunteers who are working there said a lot of mattresses had mould/holes/grime all over them. In total 12 new mattresses were bought and delivered there.
Again thanks so much to everyone who donated! It was very much appreciated!!
