Your description states "She has had the car for 18yrs with no incident and third party insurance would not cover this because he smashed into her." Most third party vehicle policies have some sort of uninsured driver protection, so there is cover for this type of thing - if she has third party insurance, I would strongly suggest she contacts her insurer to find out whether her particular policy offers this cover.
