The Midwinter Carnival is a much-loved community celebration in the heart of the Dunedin winter, where art and performance create a unique and magical event. We ask everyone who attends to make a donation to help cover critical event expenses. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Contrary to popular opinion this event is not run by the Dunedin City Council but by a small non profit organisation that fund raises all year round to make it happen. Funding is gratefully received from the City Council and many other funders but does not cover all our expenses. A huge amount of work is done by volunteers and many artists go above and beyond the call of duty (and what we can afford to pay them) each year to create the most amazing community event.

If everyone who attended paid just $5 we would be able to pay everyone involved what they deserve and do so many more exciting things. Holding a free/koha event in the centre of town is incredibly challenging financially. With your support we will be able to continue to present this beautiful and highly accessible community event.

About us

Dunedin Midwinter Celebrations is a registered charitable trust established in 2003 to support seasonal celebrations in New Zealand. We believe it is important to celebrate our distinct seasons in a way that is appropriate to our local environment. Each year we produce one or more events, working with talented local artists and the wider community. Our main event is the Dunedin Midwinter Carnival.

Use of funds

Event expenses such as materials for lantern making and costume making. Production expenses such as road closure, sound and lighting equipment. Personnel costs so we can pay artists to create giant lanterns, run workshops and create beautiful costumes.
