Dyan's Mental Health Volunteer Work in Sri Lanka

$15 of $2,500 goal
Given by 3 generous donors in around 7 months

I am a recent graduate volunteering to work in Sri Lanka for 5 weeks as a psychologist, helping people from disadvantaged communities.

Auckland

Hi my name is Dyan and I have recently finished my Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Psychology. Since University of Auckland does not provide any placement opportunities, I have decided to pursue a mental health placement in Sri Lanka through SLV Global which would give me invaluable hands on experience while being able to help in a community where resources are scarce.

In Sri Lanka, 1 in 4 people suffer from some type of mental health illness or trauma, giving one of the highest suicide rates in the world. This can be due to the country’s 25 years of civil war and the Indian ocean tsunami in 2004. However, there is a lack of psychologists as well as a high social stigma towards seeking help in mental health illness. The primary treatment is also pharmacological which is not enough as mental health is more complex.

I will be spending 5 weeks in Sri Lanka in March 2019 as a volunteer. I will be working with SLV Global which trains volunteers to focus on the quality of work they do, rather than it being just a holiday experience. Throughout my placement, I will work on projects that would help individuals have better outcomes through supporting those in recovery, teaching English to children, and serving as a positive role model to children who are developing in disadvantaged communities.

The placement cost is $2,800 NZD which does not include flights, insurance, vaccinations, and transport. The funds will go towards workshops, training, and talks on how to provide psychological help to people in Sri Lanka which caters it to their experiences and culture.

I believe that this experience is going to be challenging, however very rewarding. It is my passion to help others and it is an honour to be given the opportunity to help improve others’ mental health.

Thank you for your contribution. Any amount of donation will be greatly appreciated.
