Dylan's Path to Walk is set up to raise funds to allow Dylan to have life changing surgery in America to help him walk independantly

Southland

Dylan Towey is the 4 year old son of my first cousin Ann Marie living in Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon, Ireland . Dylan was born twelve weeks premature in June 2011. At this time it was discovered that Dylan had suffered strokes before birth. He spent eleven weeks in hospital and had a difficult neonatal period – he had two serious infections and required seven blood transfusions. Unfortunately, Dylan’s premature birth combined with the strokes and the difficult neonatal period, left him with permanent damage. Dylan has a brain injury and at seventeen months of age, he was officially diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.

Despite all of the challenges Dylan has faced – he has achieved so much. He participates in physical and occupational therapy and his parents do an exercise program with him everyday. Through lots of hard work, Dylan has learnt to roll, crawl, sit and pull to stand. He can now walk short distances in a Kaye walker. The damage to Dylan’s brain affects the messages being sent to his muscles – particuraly in his legs. This causes Dylan’s legs to become extremely tight (spasticity) and as a direct result, he cannot stand or walk independently.

Dylan has been accepted for an operation known as Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) in St Louis Children’s Hospital in Missouri, USA. The operation will reduce the spasticity in his legs and allow Dylan to learn how to stand and walk independently. To cover the costs of the operation and the intensive post operative rehab, a fundraising committee called ‘Dylan’s Path To Walk’ has been established. As well as the operation, Dylan will require physiotherapy on a daily basis and special equipment to help him achieve his dream of walking.

If you would be in a position to help Dylan in any way possible, we would be extremely grateful. You can find us on facebook at www.facebook.com/dylanspathtowalk or please contact us by email on dylanspathtowalk@gmail.com.

Dylan Towey is the 4 year old son of my 1st Cousin in Ireland, Ann Marie Duffy. Ann Marie is the daughter of my Godmother, Mary Theresa Duffy. Ann Marie has set up a fundraiser in Ireland to help raise the money required so Dylan has a chance of walking independently. Friends and family from all over the world have been raising money over the past few months and I want to help in any way I can. I am not in Ireland so I can't help directly, but hopefully even from here in New Zealand I can contribute. I am going to run the Queenstown Marathon in aid of Dylan and am hoping to raise some money along the way.

Painful but rewarding!!  25 November 2015

Well I achieved my ultimate goal of running a marathon to help raise money for Dylan. On Saturday 21 November 2015 I completed the International Queenstown Marathon.

Although delighted to break the 3hr 30min milestone, I was disappointed I didn't do better. I believe the training I had completed the previous 4 months should have been enough to allow me to crack the 3 hr 20min mark. However I ran a very poor race strategically and rather than running across the finishing line with a spring in my step, I crossed the line in severe pain with my feet barely coming off the ground!

Although immediately after the race I uttered the words "never again" to my wife and kids, I have now started to think about my next marathon and in particularly cracking the 3hr 20min.

I finished up 100th out of 1604 so I am very pleased with that but what has given me the most satisfaction is knowing I have raised $3000 towards my cousins operation and continual care.

This being my last post, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you all for your kind donation, it just goes to prove what a great country i live in and how lucky I was to meet a girl from NZ.

Slan leat agus gurbh maith agat.

Well done Frank, I love the fact that even after all that training, the excitement got the best of ya and you blew a gasket in the first half of the race! I know that second half must have been torture, but 3.28 still bloody fast time. I'll double your first half split and pay out on 3:08. Wish him luck from me.
