Support for Carolyn and Doug

  • An update from Carolyn

      11 December 2018

Hi Everyone. Carolyn has sent through an update from her Hospital Bed in Whangarei

Well, I'd love to tell you all that it was all sorted regarding ACC, but that's not the case. Following the support needs assessment which advised I needed 24 hour care (of which ACC were to fully pay their part to complement the Ministry of Health hours) they increased their sleepover cover from 4 nights per week to 7 nights per week which was great. However they also reduced the daytime cover from 35.5 hours per week to 9.5 hours per week leaving a marked deficit in my daytime care.

So since the beginning of October we've been paying over $500 a week in care again. This was supposed to be reviewed at a new 'needs assessment meeting' on Friday but unfortunately I ended up in hospital Friday morning with a high fever, headache, neck pain and rash which turned out to be cellulitis. It went from being a small patch on my right hip late Thursday night and then went on a bit of a rampage to cover most of my back, sides and left hip by the time I got to hospital on Friday. It continued to spread down my legs despite IV antibiotics so a change in antibiotics 24 hours later has helped to control the fever and reduce the spread. It's now receding and despite being still quite angry the plan is to change me to oral antibiotics and go home tomorrow. All very random has no entry wound could be found. Perhaps I just need to check out the medical ward at this time of year to ensure they've done a good job with their Xmas decorations, 🙃🎊,...I think the ED were ahead of the pack this year with their Xmas bunting across all corridor ceilings! 👍😃

As such, the needs assessment is now postponed until the new year due to the Christmas period coming up and so I won't have any further updates regarding ACC until late January I suspect.

So I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy, healthy and safe holiday season… Enjoy your Christmas and New Year and I hope you get to have some fun and relaxation wherever it may take you. Thanks again for your love and support over this journey, Doug and I so appreciate the network of people that have developed and shown us the support and positive vibes to get us through this challenging time.

Happy holidays to you all, keep safe when travelling and have a great start to 2019🎄🍒⛺🏖🏄‍♀🚣

Love from Carolyn and Doug ❤

      Hi Carolyn

So lovely to hear from you : ) Although not the most positive of update based on ACC and the recent infection, you come across so positive and bright. You are amazing to think of everyone and their Christmas holidays, I hope that you have some nice times too!!!

What the heck is the story with the recent set back, so frustrating being back in hospital again but I guess that is your norm now. Glad your home in time for Christmas. Somewhere along the way I lost Doug's email (only have MSD) so didn't get to incl him in our yearly Christmas email out.

I don't know how you and Doug do it, you have strength within beyond what we comprehend. It would be so cool to catch up evening for an evening with you guys. We miss you both and do talk about you often. Carolyn I have kept the lovely letter you sent with all the flight memorbilia for Ben and Lily in their memory box for when they'll open when they are 18. Can you believe they are going to be 7 in January. Growing up so fast.

I'm not sure if I sent this to you before Carolyn but I am now addicted to audio books, reading so much. I'm sure you are too but if you fancy something to listen to... I'm sending you my audio log in details and there's hundreds of books ... you might find my taste too mainstream though!

Too much to say and not so easy to say in such an open forum. I hope some day we meet again... wow that sounds godly!!! But you never know. I would love to bring B&L back to NZ some day and you and Doug would def be on our ppl to meet.

      Best wishes to you both

    INTERIM UPDATE...

I've been waiting for some clarity on my situation before updating you all but that's taking a while so thought I'd give an interim update meantime!

A few hours before my review hearing with ACC was due to go ahead they changed their decision and decided to reinstate cover for my lower back injury. It has taken some time for that to actually materialise into anything but some interim care has now been reinstated for 6 weeks while I undergo some further assessments and they do a case review. So while we are still covering a small portion of my care privately most of it is now covered... at least for the meantime! I've learnt not to take anything for granted and so until the results of these assessments and case review are finalised and I have more assurance than interim care I'm not counting my chickens 🐣😊 The interim care came just in the nick of time though as I was down to $20 in the fundraising care account. So a huge thank you to all of you again for your support in keeping me at home with the money donated. And without your messages of support and love I don't know how we'd have made it through to this point. So thank you ALL again from the bottom of my heart ❤❤❤ The pain continues to be an ongoing challenge and we are trying all avenues to try and help with it as the severity of it makes life rather restricted.

I will give another update when we know more about the longer term decisions around my ACC cover and care going forward. I hope you're all enjoying spring! 🦋 🌷🦋

  • Update on Carolyn

      12 July 2018

    Hi all.

A quick update about our lovely friend Carolyn.

ACC requested an adjournment on the much awaited 'needs reassessment' 24 hours out from the meeting that was due to take place on July 4th. This was pretty upsetting for Carolyn and Doug. They have been holding out for this meeting in the hope there will be a change in Caro's allocated care hours as her requirements are much more than they used to be since the Osteopath injury. The meeting has been rescheduled for August.

Carolyn's bowel surgery a month ago went well despite an initially rough recovery, however she has spent the last week in hospital with a rare complication. She was hoping to get home today as she is hopefully on the improve as far as the bowel surgery goes. Her radicular pain is still very severe and at times unbearable and unfortunately some of the treatment for the bowel surgery has exacerbated her pain.

We know you'll all be thinking of her and Doug as they wait for this next meeting and Carolyn heals from her surgery and copes with her daily challenges.

We still have more earrings should anyone want to purchase some, PM myself (Meg Irvine) or Paula Oram.

    Meg

Hi guys. I just wanted to say a big thank you for the support and love you have given Doug and I. The last few months have again been tough hence the delay with an update. The DHB funding was stopped in March and the ACC review is scheduled for July. The funds you have raised for us have been a huge help in enabling me to stay at home with Doug and our cats. The pain is still intense from the lumbar manipulation injury nearly 2 years ago and unfortunately due to its effect on my bowel function, I am now needing bowel surgery. This will take place later this week in Kensington hospital here in Whangarei. On a positive note part of our raised planter is now complete thanks to Doug's hard work and yesterday we got some winter veges planted 🌱... it will be great to watch these grow to harvest 😊Thanks again so much to each and every one of you for all your love and support, I wouldn't be still at home without it ❤️🌻🦋

I missed out a paragraph! Also a huge thank you to Karen Ley and her husband Tom who held one of their wrestling shows here in Whangarei and all proceeds were donated to my care fund, you guys rock! And my Aunt Karen Frost has been busy helping me plant up pots and our front garden with winter flower plants and bulbs for spring... gardening, albeit vicariously, puts me in my happy place! Thank you all again 😊🌿🌸

      17 March 2018

Thank you all so much for your support. Unfortunately the ACC review was adjourned/postponed due to essential medical information not being provided in time. With the DHB portion of the funding for day home care only being approved until the 25th of March, there is now uncertainty on how long Carolyn will be able to stay at home. At this stage a new date has not been set for the ACC review. We are hoping the DHB will extend the home care funding but it's looking unlikely at this point. The money raised by give-a-little is still at present going towards the night time care, so THANKS AGAIN for your continued support... at this stage the need is open ended until hopefully ACC decide to go back to fully supporting Carolyns care. Will keep you in touch with any progress as it comes to hand!

  • Thanks to you Carolyn is home

      11 February 2018

Hi Guys. Sorry for the late update, it's a crazy time of year. Due to your AMAZING support, Carolyn got home on the 12th of Jan. This was on the 100th day after her hospital admission. The money we have raised is paying for her night time care, with the DHB and Ministry paying for the day time care. So without your support she wouldn't be at home enjoying being with Doug and their cats. To top it off, Carolyn and Doug have used some of the money to start building a lovely raised planter to help bring the love of gardening back into their lives. The DHB funding is only short term until the ACC review which is on at the end of the month, so crossing our fingers they will go back to fully funding the care Carolyn needs so she can stay at home. Watch this space. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH AGAIN!
