To show our dear and most amazing friend Carolyn and her husband Doug support and love from their friends family across the world

Northland

Friends, love, laughter, light, sunshine, freedom and good times..... the essence of LIFE.

In June 2016, through “medical misadventure", Carolyn had 5 out of 7 of these important components of life needlessly taken away from her.

Instead of living, she is currently "existing". As friends, we're providing as much love & support as we can, however we're also wanting to help her a little more... ideally with some funding to pay for the extra care & support that she currently needs.

Having graduated from Massey University in 1999 with a Veterinary degree, Carolyn excelled in her profession until, in 2006, a freak horse riding accident in the UK, left her with tetraplegia, unable to move from the neck down.

With sheer determination, strength, positive thinking and the support of her husband Doug, Carolyn astounded us all with her recovery, regaining an extraordinary level of independence, given the nature of her injuries, requiring minimal carer assistance during the day.

Within hours of receiving a medical manipulation treatment on 8th June 2016, all that changed... From living a life of reasonable independence (being up and about all day, working from home, driving a wheelchair adapted car, doing post-grad studies, socialising, travelling, gardening, cooking, shopping, transferring herself in/out of bed, showering and toileting alone, partaking in riding for the disabled and making future plans for parenthood with Doug), Carolyn was once again incapacitated, only this time with associated unbearable pain.

Through no fault of her own, this treatment injury resulted in potentially permanent nerve damage in her lower spine. This left Carolyn needing 24 hour care, virtually unable to leave the house, experiencing continuous severe pain in her lower back, buttock and leg, with any slight jolt or movement causing additional shooting pain. It also affected her sensation and bowel function, restricting her to 2-3 hrs in her chair at a time and needing to spend a lot of time in bed to try to manage the pain.

6 weeks ago, ACC withdrew it's funding for her 24hr care and support, and the Ministry of Health said it could not provide enough care for her to be safely at home. So Carolyn is currently stranded (literally) in hospital, in a shared ward. The majority of her days are spent lying down, with nurses or carers turning her from her side to her back and reaching for anything that she needs. While the District Health Board debates its ability to provide the additional level of care that she requires to allow her to be back in her own home, Carolyn has no idea how long she will remain in hospital. Various specialists that she has seen have not been able to provide definite answers, effective treatment or any promise of improvement. With potential further surgeries/investigations on the horizon, she requires a number of medications to get through each day, but they do not block much of the pain. Unsurprisingly, this situation causes enormous stress to Carolyn and Doug.

In order to help bring some laughter, light, sunshine, freedom and good times back into Carolyn and Doug's life, to remind them of all of your love and support, we've set up this give a little page to collect donations

Kim, Paula and I are University friends of Carolyn. It started trying to raise money through selling earrings. We sold almost all our earrings within 48 hours and realised that there were many people out there who have been wanting to show Carolyn and Doug love and support but not sure how to do this. We know this won't take away her constant pain and immobility but we hope that the support and messages will make them feel surrounded by our love.

Use of funds

Funds will be used to support Carolyn getting what she needs to improve her Quality of Life

An update from Carolyn  11 December 2018

Hi Everyone. Carolyn has sent through an update from her Hospital Bed in Whangarei

Well, I'd love to tell you all that it was all sorted regarding ACC, but that's not the case. Following the support needs assessment which advised I needed 24 hour care (of which ACC were to fully pay their part to complement the Ministry of Health hours) they increased their sleepover cover from 4 nights per week to 7 nights per week which was great. However they also reduced the daytime cover from 35.5 hours per week to 9.5 hours per week leaving a marked deficit in my daytime care.

So since the beginning of October we've been paying over $500 a week in care again. This was supposed to be reviewed at a new 'needs assessment meeting' on Friday but unfortunately I ended up in hospital Friday morning with a high fever, headache, neck pain and rash which turned out to be cellulitis. It went from being a small patch on my right hip late Thursday night and then went on a bit of a rampage to cover most of my back, sides and left hip by the time I got to hospital on Friday. It continued to spread down my legs despite IV antibiotics so a change in antibiotics 24 hours later has helped to control the fever and reduce the spread. It's now receding and despite being still quite angry the plan is to change me to oral antibiotics and go home tomorrow. All very random has no entry wound could be found. Perhaps I just need to check out the medical ward at this time of year to ensure they've done a good job with their Xmas decorations, 🙃🎊,...I think the ED were ahead of the pack this year with their Xmas bunting across all corridor ceilings! 👍😃

As such, the needs assessment is now postponed until the new year due to the Christmas period coming up and so I won't have any further updates regarding ACC until late January I suspect.

So I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy, healthy and safe holiday season… Enjoy your Christmas and New Year and I hope you get to have some fun and relaxation wherever it may take you. Thanks again for your love and support over this journey, Doug and I so appreciate the network of people that have developed and shown us the support and positive vibes to get us through this challenging time.

Happy holidays to you all, keep safe when travelling and have a great start to 2019🎄🍒⛺🏖🏄‍♀🚣

Love from Carolyn and Doug ❤
