Help us give a unique kid the education he deserves!

Canterbury

Brodie joined our family after losing his mother to a fatal heart attack. He didn't get the best start early in life and at age 4 he couldn't speak, make eye contact or meet any of the developmental milestones you would expect from a boy of his age. Diagnosed with autism and developmental delay it appeared Brodie would have limited potential.

Since then however, his development has been amazing. In a caring environment he soon learnt to talk, read and write and demonstrate a remarkable memory for details. It saddened us to learn that he recalls the day his mother died, right down to the number plates of the emergency service vehicles that attended.

Brodie managed mainstream schooling throughout primary school and has developed into a great kid. His interests are unique and ever changing. He loves maps, GPS and the Stock Exchange. He has a passion for electronics and can intuitively program a computer like a pro. Now he's at high school age he can no longer cope with conventional schooling. He struggles to focus and needs constant supervision as he has limited ability to identify risks or boundaries. Public funding is limited as Brodie's needs don't fit the standardized criteria for support.

We are currently looking for the right school environment for him. Because he lives in a rural community this will inevitably mean having to board at a specialist school. Without funding it is really hard to be able to travel to these schools for assessment, let alone meet the costs needed to allow him to attend school and travel to and from home for the holidays.

We need to be able to access child development experts that can provide us with the right advice to ensure we are doing everything possible to help Brodie to meet his full potential.

Money raised will go towards finding Brodie the right schooling for him and allow us to access specialist care that could make the difference in Brodie's life.

My parents adopted Brodie 9 years ago and since then have worked tirelessly to provide for him. When most people their age are looking forward to retirement they are still working hard looking after Brodie. I see their endless frustrations dealing with the public education system that can't seem to fit Brodie into their 'criteria' and it's obvious they really need some help.

I want to help by providing the funds to help them find the right education solutions for Brodie. All we want is to see him reach his full potential.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause. Was a pleasure to meet Brodie a few years back. Hope everything works out ok but I know he has a lot of love and support around him regardless.
