Two days before I was due to leave Thailand, I had an accident that completely changed everything.
I twisted my ankle, and what I thought might be a minor injury turned out to be far more serious. Due to osteoporosis, my bone didn’t break cleanly—it shattered. I also tore ligaments and tendons, and needed urgent surgery with pins inserted to stabilise the damage.
Because I was overseas at the time, I had no choice but to go ahead with treatment immediately.
After returning to Japan, I have continued medical treatment and recovery for my ankle injury. Due to the severity of the fracture and ligament/tendon damage, I am currently under ongoing care, including follow-up appointments, monitoring of the surgical site, and rehabilitation planning.
At this stage, I am using a wheelchair for mobility and require assistance with daily activities while my ankle heals. Recovery is expected to take several months.
The cost of surgery and hospital care in Thailand has come to over NZD $24,000. The additional costs in Japan include:Accessible accom.: I had to move to a more suitable wheelchair friendly apartment NZD $5,000 including deposits, rent wheelchair hire.
